Recomend me a GPU

Thread Starter
Hello OCN!!

I am in kind of a desperate situation GPU wise. My GTX460 1GB is starting to artifact at lower then stock clocks and I'm using my integrated GPU on my i5.

I kind of wanted a new build all together but i really all i really do is play games so no need for an 3960X and quad SLI lol

I have about $400 to spend on a GPU for my sig rigg. I am an nvidia fanboii since that is all I have ever used. But I am open to the red team i just hear about a lot of issues with drivers so im kind of iffy. I Dont have the option for SLI or Xfire since im running a MITX setup with 1 PCI X16 slot.

I know I might run into a bottleneck with my cpu but i think at the clocks i have it at it should perform decent.

All i really do right now is play BF3 @ 1920X1080 (@ medium with my GTX460 since I like to get constant 60+ FPS) I wouls love to turn up the eye candy ans get a healthy boost in my gaming experience. I know a GTX480 is a good proce but i was looking more at non reference cards like the 7870 Asus DCUII or the HAWK style. It has to be dual slot since I only have 2 PCI slots on my case. Tho I am not shy from reference biggrin.gif

For my PSu I have this guy
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152035

but I do have an XFX 750W 80+ silver just incase it is needed tongue.gif

What would the mighty GPU gurus of OCN bestow oupon my sig rig biggrin.gif

thank you for any suggestions and recommendations. I really do appreciate it!! I miss BF3 sad-smiley-002.gif

With a $400 price range then you could get a GTX580 and be good to go for a while. They're at the top of your price point and some are slightly more expensive +$20'ish.

Or a 560ti 448 to give you a little more boost.

Yeah, you could Find a Used 580 on the marketplace here, or wait until the 670 comes out, which should only be a week or two thumb.gif

Well if you cant wait and you have $400 to spend, you cant beat a 7950 right now. Unless you wait for a 670, you should go with a 7950 but for $50 more you can get a 7970 for $450 which is a great deal. As for the driver issues, Nvidia has plenty, they are far from perfect in that department, both AMD and Nvidia have their fair share. Trust me, I have had many different GPUs from both companies over the years. Being a fanboy will do you no good, always buy whichever gpu has the features you want with the best price performance ratio.

No way your cpu will bottleneck either card, especially at 4.4ghz. Even a Phenom II at 4ghz is barely bottlenecked by either card in the majority of games.

Edit: Er I forgot your cpu is a dual core but even still, at 4.4 it should be close to a phenom II at a high clock speed. Either way, you will see a significant boost in fps.

Ya, you are completely fine with your cpu for any of the high end cards. If i was you i would get the 7950! right now they have the 3 game deal pack going on right now with the purchase of it.

I would get the gigabyte. The sapphire is out of stock now, and the other cards with non ref coolers get too close to the 7970 price. Either way enjoy your new card thumb.gif

Without AA, the GTX 580 is within ~1-2 FPS of the 7950. With AA on though, the 7950 leaves the GTX 580 in the dust with double the VRAM.
