Why can't amd compete anymore? - Page 3

So why not make a chipset that can do 2 cpu? 4 cpu?

Do an intel X79 job and convert an enterprise board type to retail.

It feels like a monkey with a magic 8 ball would be better running the company.

It feels like a monkey with a magic 8 ball would be better running the company.

Those are exactly what are called Server Grade boards. Only response is from Asus and EVGA on the enthusiast side with their dual CPU board. There is really nothing AMD can do until an Arch revision to improve IPC.

Bulldozer isn't true 8 core in anycase, it performs exceptionally for what it is. You can think of it as ultra-class Hyper Threading but many magnititudes greater in performance ration compared to Intels HT implementation.

AMD really is competeting just fine. They have to get a massive budget influx. You might see that happening with Trinity, and possibly some mega server setups using AMD. That will pay big bank to ol' AMD.

Its one less than stellar release. Phenom II was a great line of processors. I thought they competed very well. Bulldozer is faster than Phenom II albeit slightly and it overclocks a lot better. Ivy Bridge is around 5% faster than Sandy Bridge, doesnt overclock nearly as well and has heat issues. Where are all the threads asking why cant Intel compete anymore?

AMD is putting out outstanding GPU's and their Llano line is selling like hotcakes. They stumbled with Bulldozer but theyre hitting on all cylinders in every other aspect. Now if Piledriver comes out and is a dud, then there will be a genuine reason to wonder *** is up with AMD, but for right now, I dont see AMD in a bad way. They made a ton of changes after Bulldozer and everything we're seeing right now is pointing to them continuing to move in a good direction.

Glad someone sees this from a mature and understanding view point. I can't say I disagree with anything major you said in the above, AMD has it's place in the market and if they can gain more we as the consumer win.

.

The reason people are not asking this of Intel is because we know about their Tick-Tock cycle that they follow. Intel even stated that Ivy Bridge wasn't, as per Tick-Tock, a performance increase but just a die shrink. Sandy Bridge was a Tock in the cycle, a major evolution and performance gain, Ivy is a Tick a manufacturing process change. Haswell will be another Tock and should provide a very large improvement in performance.

As goes Intel...Tick...Tock....Tick....Tock.

AMD, on the other hand, came out to press with Bulldozer talking a big game! It was going to change the market environment and compete with Sandy......then they released it and we all know the rest.

Bulldozer's 'octal' core is just four modules with two integer cores per module that share - they're not independent cores like the Phenom II X4 and X6.

I'll give you a hint..that dual-core-with-hyperthreading chip is going to make you wait.and lock up :yessir.gif:.While an overclocked Thuban

I still have hope for AMD later this year.

I don't know honestly. I was really expecting alot from BD. I'd been using AMD for years and had great respect for them. I even own stock in AMD. But as you can see from my rig, I've move on to Intel. Why? I was tired of a lack luster CPU. I had the AMD965BE @ 4.0ghz and it was giving me bottleneck issues in games when I had a EVGA GTX 470 SLI @ 800/1650/2000 clock setup. I just grew tired of the lack of a good CPU.

What I think lead to this decline is AMD's idea that a machine can make a better CPU then a human can. Granted machine manufacturing has a place. Even Intel uses it. But letting a machine design, build, and manufacture a chip was not the correct approach. It led to a bloated CPU taking up to much space and effecting the performance.

Now, if piledriver can deliver much better results for gaming the SB and IV then I'll gladly welcome AMD back with open arms and a ready rig. But unlike before, I'll not build up a system for a CPU only to have it flop and I wasted damn near $800 on spare parts for it.
