No, core means nothing in terms of performance.

I suppose we should still be rocking Pentium 4's then eh?

Why can't they get the ati GPU guys to design the cpu?
This is getting depressing.
And why aren't they kicking out 12 core phenom II chips or something??

Why do people start threads like this?

Do you realize that AMD has excellent CPU/APU products? Do you realize they are still taking market share from Intel? Do you realize that Trinity laptop chips being released in 2 weeks are a full generation ahead of Intel's Ivy Bridge laptop CPUs with HD 4000 that was released this week? Did you know that IB chips run hot and are only ~5% better than SB - much like FX is to Phenom II?

If you believe that because AMD doesn't sell the fastest discrete CPU they are no longer able to compete, you are sadly mistaken as sales figures and profits demonstrate.

The new CEO Rory Read, was hired a few months back and AMD is going thru a complete restructuring and they are still pumping out excellent products that will only get better with time. Maybe you should do a little research instead of posting silly questions. This thread will just turn into another flamefest... redface.gif

What would you do with 12 core "Phenom II" CPU which would be primarily for server use?

:thinking.gif: Those charts don't prove much: a)Thuban is @ stock speeds,NOT 4.0+
b)Not much reference to heavy-duty games i.e.:GTA IV,L.A.Noire..Crysis(maybe Crysis is there)
Look @ the x264 benchmark..
Dual-core sb nets what? I can't recall..I'll be generous and say 36 Gflops max
six-core Thuban does 77
Only cpu that does higher is quad-core Sandy/Ivy
Put it this way..If OC'd Thuban seems faster than stock 2500K ..It's definitely gonna be faster than i3 SB
i3 550 @ 4.5+ is faster than SB,too

Btw..That's not a good comparison chart if you want to show i3-2100 is better lachen.gif:
'cause it looks like that Thuban has higher marks in most things :eek.gif:

in all seriousness, i would love to have AMD back in competition, intel is starting to slack in the engineering because AMD is not giving them enough competition anymore. In fact the AMD intel competition is what got both companies tp output such great CPU's its just up to us to determine and buy the best one at the time of purchase.

I'm sorry this is incorrect. SOME Xeon's are faster than AMD's Opterons, but they also cost so much more that the speed benefit is completely lost.

I will use Cinebench and F@H as an example as I have numbers for both. An SR2 with Hexes at 4.x costs upwards of $1500+ but gets destroyed by an AMD 4p like mine (see sig) in Cinebench and F@H. My 4p cost $1300. A 2p E5-2690 gets 24 points in cinebench. My 4p gets 22, and a 4x12core 4p gets 30.

2p e5 2690 = $5-6k = 24 cinebench points
4p Opteron 6128 = $1.3-1.5k 22 cinebench points
4p Opteron 6174 = $2.5-3k 30 cinebench points
There are Opteron 4p's capable of over 40 points and they STILL cost less than a Xeon setup.

Inb4: BUT HERP DERP THE XEON ONLY HAS 2 CPUS ITS NOT FAIR!@!@!
point? AMD still destroys Intel for less $.

Since when is folding not useful? Even if you don't fold, F@H is a good fairly good benchmark.

What? So because Intel decided to cripple their lower end cpus and destroy the entire point of overclocking we should run our AMD cpus at stock speed to?
