SSD and HDD configuration questions for both Linux and Windows

Thread Starter
Hello, I recently completed my first full build and so far everything is looking good (knock on wood).

[For questions out of context, please see bottom of post.]

Anyway, I just saw a really good deal, or what I think is a really good deal anyway, on a 120gb OCZ Agility 3 drive for about $90 (stacking coupons from Newegg) so I picked it up and I'm expecting delivery tomorrow. I already have a Sandisk Extreme 120gb SSD, so I was thinking about putting Windows on the Sandisk SSD and Ubuntu Linux on the OCZ SSD for a non-partitioned dual-boot machine (at least for the time being). After a few months, I'm wondering if I can raid the two SSDs. I realize that the Sandisk Extreme is better performing and faster, which is why I want to use it for Windows and games.

In addition, I have an older Seagate Sata II 1-TB mechanical drive that I would like to make available to both OS's, so I'm wondering if their is a way to mount that drive in both Windows and Linux to share its storage so that I don't have to partition it (and so I can have access to the files from both Linux and Windows). I do realize that both Linux and Windows have different formatting, but is there anyway to get around this, considering it will only be storage and not a boot drive?

For whatever it's worth, I'm not familiar with Windows at all, having moved to OS-X and Linux after the Vista atrocity. I have been exclusively using both OSX and Ubuntu for many, many years without ever looking back until I built this new machine. However, wanting to play at least one game (Total War: Shogun 2) and take advantage of AsRock's xfast, I decided to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview (since it was free) and it has at least lightened my impression of Windows. I then bought a copy of Windows 7 Pro 64bit OEM and am also awaiting that in the mail.

After I get my fill of Total War and/or Windows, I plan on going back to only Ubuntu, thus I'm wondering if I can raid (0) the two SSD's. They are the same size and use the same Sandforce controller, though I believe they have different types of flash. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Sandisk uses 24nm Toggle NAND, while the OCZ Agility 3 uses 25nm Asynchronous NAND. Does the brand or type of "flash" matter for raid, or should I be able to raid these two SSD's since they have the same controller?

In case it matters, my build is as follows:

[CPU] i5 2500k (overclocked to 4.3ghz)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO air cooler
[MoBo] AsRock z77 Extreme 6
[GPU] Geforce GTX 560 ti 1GB (*-waiting on shipment)
[RAM] 8gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 (x2 4gb sticks)
[SSD] Sandisk Extreme 120gb SATA III
[SSD] OCZ Agility 3 120gb SATA III (*-wating on shipment)
[HDD] Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm SATA II
[PSU] SeaSonic M12II +Bronze 620w Modular

*-Everything besides the 560 ti and OCZ SSD is already put together (I'm currently using the intel HD 3000 on-die graphics).

[Questions]

1. If I have Windows on one SSD and Linux on the another SSD, can I mount my single mechanical HDD in both OS's so I can share the drive and its contents without partitioning?

2. Later, after I go back to a single OS (Ubuntu), can I raid the two same-sized SSD's since they have the same controller and capacity, in spite of the fact that they are different brands, using different NAND?

3. Is there a better option, or does my proposed plans seem flawed? Is there a better configuration as far as stability and performance?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

I wouldn't RAID two SSDs from two different manufacturers with different firmware and different NAND. Seems like if complications could come up, a situation like that would bring them up.

You can mount NTFS on both Windows and Linux, but I've heard that occasionally Ubuntu will corrupt stuff. The NTFS-3G drivers are not perfect. Even in 11.10 people were reporting issues...

FAT32 isn't really a good option - 4GB filesize limit. Ext3 might be an option, but the ext3 drivers for Windows are really immature and might corrupt that. Honestly, NTFS seems safer.

There might be a better option - but it isn't useful if you need local storage. I started storing cross-OS data on a NAS, since every OS can access shares flawlessly - thank you Samba/CIFS! wink.gif

Thanks for the reply, Kramy. Although I have often heard of the term, I'm not too familiar with NAS. I mean I know what it is, but nothing more really. Would that be a viable option for storing movies, music, pictures and other various files like PS/Gimp files? Could I say, store an 8gb BR rip and watch it from the NAS? Could I work on PS/Gimp or Flex/PHP project files straight from NAS? Could I load all of my programs locally and the data for those programs on the NAS, or would performance really suffer?

Again, thanks.

Again, thanks.

Performance might suffer a bit, but it is doable.

I'm using a prebuilt/prefab NAS. (ReadyNAS NV+) It's only capable of ~25MB/sec writes and ~35MB/sec reads. Something like that would be too slow for your uses.

But if you put together a FreeNAS build running on somewhat fast hardware, that would definitely fit your usage. Performance might still suffer, since gigabit ethernet is only capable of ~90-100MB/sec speeds (HDDs and SSDs have already pushed beyond that), but I do think it would be fast enough for the tasks you outlined. Being networked does add some latency (0.5-1ms), but with HDDs that's not a major concern.

Look up FreeNAS or unRAID. I think there's a few people on these forums that have built NAS's using them. They might be able to tell you more.
