How bad are stock coolers? (Ivy Bridge)

My 3570K is on route, and uh, everyone is out of the either adapter I need for my Zalman CNPS9500LED. CRAP. I was going to use it for testing the overclockability of the new rig, and then go to full time overclocking once I got a CNPS9900MAXB. So... looks like I'm going with the stock fan for a while.

So uh, how bad are the stock fans? It's been a while since I've used one, and they have come a long way, but is it safe to be pushing overclocking on one for testing? And how much of a temperature difference would we be talking about? (Note, it's in a very good case)

Umm... wut? Please take a look at what you posted.

EDIT: oh ok good you fixed it.

Stock cooler works. It's not good, but you aren't going to kill your processor by trying to oc on it briefly. It'll just crash / auto shut-off due to heat if it gets too hot. You won't get a good OC at all though.

Why don't you just buy the conversion bracket elsewhere? Or rig one up yourself?

Maybe a 10-15% overclock at most on a stock cooler, which will still be under the Max TJ temp. But its subjective. Personally, I would wait for that bracket or the aftermarket cooler before overclocking. I mean the processor still works.

I wasn't going to keep it cranked up or anything, Just test it, see how it would handle it, check if it was a bad batch, etc. With how Ivy Bridge is, I'm not sure I want to do that on a stock cooler.

And yet the $30 CoolerMaster 212+ will beat that still. tongue.gif The OCZ Vendetta 2 on that list....that's the same cooler as a CM 212+. That's a "budget" cooler by todays standards.

I wouldn't waste ANY money on a Zalman cooler today honestly. They were great in Socket 939, early AM2, and LGA 775 days (Core 2 Duo's). Once we hit quads and higher, the Zalman coolers just suck honestly. The CNPS12x is OKAY, but its FAR from being a good performer for the money.

I have a Zalman 9500 and going from it to my TT120 my temps dropped 10 cel max load

I agree not to spend moeny on the zalman

What about a True Spirit 120 is that better then the Hyper 212 Evo?
Its hard to get decent comparisons worriedsmiley.gif

I'm planning to get a new cooler for my upcoming Ivy build but because of the heat issues I'm not sure on what to get.
I could go for the H100 but ... meh. Budget is not an issue, tho I would like to run full air.
Size is also an issue I don't think the the 500R cant hold 170mm sinks.

What would you guys use to cool Ivy 3770K or 3570K and get a decent OC?

If you want a good cooler, you'll have to spend some money. I wasn't able to find the evo, but the 212+ is a good deal at it's price range, but it's not the best. Comparing the various articles using the Arctic Freezer Xtreme as a basis (same across the reviews), a 9900MAX would be 10-15 degrees cooler that the 212+. Not sure how the evo compares though. With Ivy, if you are going to do big time overclocking you NEED that. But if you just want to run 4.4ghz and gentle voltages, you should be alright with a 212+. But it will be warm.
