Tribes Ascend is a really good free game and is very active online as well.

It's pretty fast paced with a feel of Unreal Tournament but has pretty unique gameplay.

You might struggle to find good free to play single player games as the developer can't make any money out of those. With online games, they can offer in game items for real world money to give players an edge.

You could try and have a look at the humble bundle game packs where you choose how much you would like to pay. I believe you don't have to pay anything (or if you do it's 1p or 1 cent etc). The money does go to charity though smile.gif
