Your totally right. A new engine might make 100,000 or so hardcore gamers that wouldn't have bought the new game buy it at best. Keep the gameplay tight and the hype machine rolling though and Activision can maybe add another 5 million onto their 20 million mark. Activision thinks big with their AAA franchises. Them, Take 2 Microsoft I think are just amazing at game marketing. Halo, CoD, GTA are just so well advertised compared to everything else. Their releases aren't just game releases but events. NPR talks about it when they're released. etc etc.
Microsoft in particular amazes me because they are on just a single platform. Sony's I think has an undeniabally better portfolio of games yet Gears outsells Uncharted by multiple
millions. It's pretty incredible what they do with those dumb commercials with that game.
