Upgrading my computer

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I'm looking to upgrade my pc. It currently has and phenom ii x2 over clocked to 3.7 on stock air and a 6950 also with a bit of an overlock. (about 100mhz on both clock and memory) This has served me well for playing battlefield 3 with decent fps on about medium settings( some set to high but in general I'm in the middle with things) I know my CPU is bottlenecking my machine and honestly im happy with my gpu for now so the part in question I believe is my CPU( but I'm not opposed to conversations on other parts for my machine as well) I'm certainly not opposed to switching to intel even tho it means switching boards but what are your guys thoughts? What kinda things or setups do you suggest? Oh and I only play on one monitor. 23" 1920x1080 Thanks for the help!
Cheapest and easiest would be to go to the 960T Zosma Phenom. Otherwise you are going to get 20 people in here (myself included) recommending the 2500K or 3750K with a new board. Can your 6950 unlock shaders? Either way you're right, the 6950 is well worth hanging on to especially if it unlocks. Pair it with a 2500K and you'll be playing close to ultra settings.

Hi!
IMO you have 2 choices:
- get Phenom II X4 / Phenom II X6
- get 2500K / 3550K + mobo

So it depends on you budget. I chose 2500K and I'm happy with it smile.gif

We all love 2500k smile.gif add a Z77 or a gen3 Z68 to it, and that will rock smile.gif

Or simply buy a new, better Phenom smile.gif

Nevertheless, you GPU is fine smile.gif

I really wanted to go with a phenom ii x6 unlocked but they don't make them anymore!!mad.gif And fx series is a bust. I'm really tempted to just go with a 2700k. It's more than enough than I need at the moment and even when I get a new GPU ( prob an 8000 series,I'm one to skip generations) I still think I should be good with it.

Another thing too is intel backwards compatible. If I were to get an ivy bridge board could I then get a sandy bridge CPU?
Yes you can buy an Ivy Z77 board and it will work with a sandy. If you don't do any kind of heavy rendereing or anything like that, you will be wasting $100 with an i7. Just go i5 2500K or 3750K and overclock to 4GHz+.

Okay thx for the input... What are your thoughts on a smaller ssd... I normally only play two or three games at a time so I wouldn't need tons of room but what kind of performance difference would I see?

There are 120 gig models going on sale left and right for $100 even without MIR. I wouldn't grab anything less than a 120 considering the plunging prices.

Yep get 120GB SSD, the difference is very noticeable with general use and game loading times.
Btw there is Phenom X6 on newegg, but I would still recommend 2500K.
