Help me find a laptop

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I am currently searching for a laptop for my little sister. She is graduating high school so this will be her present. She does not game (but who knows she might start).

I am thinking something with ivy bridge, webcam, 15 inch screen and preferably an i7.

I will post what I find for opinions, haven't looked at laptops in a long time so I am not sure what is a good price.

Thanks!

1.) First of all, give us a budget. I'll do a better job if you have a target budget in mind.

2.) What is the most intensive thing she will do with the laptop? Does she play games? Does she do video or photo editing? Does she CAD/CAM? Does she save alot of movies to her HDD?

Give me more info first.

If she is dong only internet and email a I3 is fine. For most games, light photo/video editing, heavy multi-tasking a I5 is fine. For intensive photo/video editing, enconding, eingineering or scientifical work a I7 is good.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246327 This product is a I5,...but I would have a hard time justifing buy a laptop with a I7 without a good reason for everyday use.

EDIT: ...Also, ...does she want to be able to watch Blue-ray movies? I can't find anything with a blue-ray player that i lke. Argh. :-(

Budget: this one I am not really sure, my parents are buying it for her and it HAS to last atleast 4 years, let's start at 1100 or so.

Uses: Currently yes it will be mostly for email, Internet and word processing. But who knows what she will decide to major in or if she will take up video editing or gaming. I want this to be a solid machine for her and it needs to be fast.

During internet, email, and word documents her HDD will ALWAYS be the bottleneck slowing her down, not her GPU or CPU.

In which case, a think a good fit would be the laptop i linked you to earlier + switch the HDD for a 256 Gb Samsung 830 SSD.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147138

The combined total around $1,000.

Yeah....I really like the idea of that. Switching a crappy 5200 RPM laptop hdd with a SSD, will give her a very noticeable speed difference for day to day use. Also, it is more reliable than a mechanical HDD. I really feel this is your best route.

(A I5 to I7 change for internet and email would not be noticeable.)

Opinion?

I'd say wait for the ivy bridge refresh and get a 13 inch Macbook pro

I do know you said 15 inch but being about done with my second year of school, I say 13 inch is a better size. It is easier to fit in a backpack, it weighs less, and it can fit better on a desk.

Reasons:
University tech support is generally very familiar with Macbook Pro's
Great battery life
Great build quality
Pretty fast
WILL last 4 years
And the product is just very polished

Education discount makes the 13in $1100

Disclaimer: I do not own a MBP nor does anyone in my family. I do know many people with them and not one of them regret their purchase, though I do have multiple friends with 16" windows machines that wish they would have gotten a 13" MBP

I also really like the idea of switching the HDD to a SSD, I absolutely love mine. The link you posted is out of stock, the lenovo is nice though.

Unless the part in discontinued,....if newegg says it's out of stock...it will be in stock once the next truck load comes in. Most warehouses have a truck come in every 1-2 weeks. Just wait, it will be there. In fact, you can set up auto-notification to email you once it arrives.

Since that puts you at $1000, you could customize the lenovo by adding a blue-ray drive or a external HDD to bring your grand total to $1,100.

Also, here is another decent lenovo with a SSD for $1,100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246326 . I am kind of on the fence about the I5 with the 250 Gb SSD, or the I7 with the 64Gb SSD and a 740 Gb HDD.

I am kind of against the one with x2 hard drives, because people who don't know much about computers do the "Default" install when installing software,....which always defaults to "C". Not sure of your sisters level of computer knowledge, but i would be afraid of her filling up the SSD, and not properly using the HDD.

Every time i get someone who isn't good with computers a small drive for the OS, and a big drive for everything else.....they just put everything on "C" anyways, and never use the second hard drive (regardless of my clear directions)....then everything gets really slow because they run out of space. ugh.

Yea I will for sure not be giving her something with 2 drives, she has never used computers much and I don't want her laptop at my house all the time because it is "messed up."

Fair enough, just a suggestion. Just trying to save some disappointment.

My next suggestion would be go to best buy with her and see what she likes. Most girls like smaller laptops which is why I suggest this, and some will choose their laptop based on keyboard feel alone.
Though if you do go with a 15" machine, make it thin. Size/weight means more than performance
