Running a student version of AutoCAD, will more memory make a noticable difference?

I'm running a Core i3-2100 with 4GB of RAM 1333 currently. (2x2GB, I only have two RAM slots)

I am doing more and more autocad work and will shortly be doing 3D work.

Would I notice a big difference by replacing that 4GB with 8GB? What about 16GB?

I am more than willing to spend the money on 2x4GB (8GB), but the 16GB gets kinda pricey, and I'm not sure I would notice an increase.

I am assuming the more the better, but is there a point of diminishing returns?

I don't think it will make a big different if you add RAM due your CPU is still the major bottleneck on AutoCAD/3D rendering. Adding more RAM will make your computer more responsive at multitasking but at rendering is still a problem with your CPU.

Things I do in Maya on my Macbook Pro with Core i7 (4 threads) still takes 15min to render one scene vs my rig which only took 1-3 min.

You will need a better CPU in order to make AUTOCAD run more efficient.

Maybe the new Ivy Bridge i5 or the 2600k, which might drop in price since it's one generation old now.
