UPGRADE or SELL my 1366 i7 Computer?

Thread Starter
I bought this computer over 3 years ago and I have finally found a game I cannot play at ULTRA (BF3). I'd like to change that and also be able to play at ULTRA when Max Payne 3 comes out. Here are my computer SPECS:

Intel Core i7 940 overclocked to 4GHz
Xigmatek S126384 Thor's Hammer Heatsink + two 120mm fans in Push Pull setup
ASUS Rampage II Extreme Motherboard
2 Intel X25-M SSD drives in RAID 0
6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 RAM 1600
ATI Radeon 5870 HD
Corsair HX 1000 PSU
Cooler Masters Cosmos S Case

I am debating if I should sell this computer and get me a new 2011 Sandy Bridge E or just upgrade Video Card and/or RAM. That is where you guys come in (hopefully). When I am playing BF3 and I ALT-TAB to see CPU/Memory/Graphics usage, I only see my Video Card at 100% stress and RAM is at 70% while it seems my i7 isn't being stressed at all.

1) Do you think replacing my Graphics Card for a 680 GTX be enough for ultra (1080P)? Perhaps Graphics Card and add 6 GB more of RAM?
2) What software could I use to run in the background that can tell me CPU/GPU/Memmory usage? I am sure there has to be a better way than ALT TAB and check Task Manager/CCC right?

Thanks guys.

The 680 GTX would be a noticeable upgrade. Do you have a buyer if you choose to sell and what do you think you can get for it?

I would say a GTX 680. No need to redo your entire rig right now, unless you wanted to. The i7 still is fine, more RAM wouldn't hurt, but I say a 680 and your set.

I think you should just change the gpu. The 940 works good. I am looking for a 1366 setup myself to step op from a 4ghz 775. You could take the money instead of upgrading everything and invest in water-cooling rig and clock even higher.thumb.gif SOme have gone as high 4.4 or higher.

I was just about to tell you the same thing, but three other people beat me to it. wink.gif

EDIT: To get to 4.4GHz is a true feat on 1366 with normal cooling as I could not do it without HT off.

I put in my opting for new video card and RAM. I think the original i7's are still massively powerful even in comparison to SB and IB.

I live in a 3rd world country where you can't get TOP components. I bought my entire computer 3 years ago when I went to the US, built it in the hotel, and brought it down to South America as one luggage. Because of this, I could probably sell this computer for $2000 here (I paid over $3000) and add $1000 more to get a 2011 Sandy Bridge E next trip to the U.S. I make if that would be a huge upgrade.

Yeah, thats what I thought. I was hoping the 680 GTX and 7970 were a bigger leap in power than what they ended up being which is a shame.

I live in a VERY hot place, so attempting more than 4GHz on air would be too risky for me lol. I have HT enabled on mine though.

BIG thanks to all you guys. I was also looking into a new Intel 1366 chip, but damn they are just as expensive as Ivy Bridge so entirely not worth it.

I still think the 680GTX is the way to go, but If you can get $2,000 for your current set-up, and are planning a trip to the US I would jump on that. $2,000 will get you a nice SB-E or IVY setup.

But then theres the cost of the trip. And everybody knows that when you go somewhere you have to bring back souvenirs. biggrin.gif
