Apple doesn't want competition at Target stores.

Wouldn't that be abusing the market with their dominance? Thought those kinds of shady business practices are illegal.

They ARE illegal. That's anti-competitive bribery. What we need next is for some other giant to bribe Target to out Apple's bribery. lachen.gif I think Amazon might have a strong case if they go for a lawsuit.

Kinda like how Apple forced Pegatron to stop manufacturing the Asus Zenbook because it directly competed with the Macbook Air: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/apple_forces_pegatron_drop_asus_ultrabook

Things is other retailers do this to. For example my local Lowes only sells Samsung's washing machines and dryers. That's right, no other brand at all. I'm pretty sure they are under exclusive contract.

When referring to a specific product such as a washer/dryer/television/etc. you are in fact correct in the "exclusivity" ordeal, but in this case, it the Kindle is an e-reader whereas Apple's products are the iPod Touch and iPad (actual smart device/tablets). I don't think that would fall under fair competition as the markets are totally different. Good example: AT&T's exclusivity deal with the iPhone. AT&T wanted to be the only provider with the iPhone, and that is fine. If they were to also demand to be the only seller for iPods, they could be in trouble for anti-competitive practice as the iPod serves a totally different purpose than a smartphone. At that point they are just trying to stop all other stores from selling iPods so that they can be the only retailer with it. That's essentially what Apple is pulling off with Target; they practically want to be the only option for electronic reading devices in the entire store.

Someone who wants a device just to simply read eBooks would now be forced to buy an Apple product if they were to shop at Target even if they had no desire for all the extra features like web browsing and apps/games (or even elsewhere if Apple gets away with it in other retailers).

You can have exclusive contracts.

If the reason target is discontinuing the kindle line is because of a BRIBE outside of an exclusive contract, then that's illegal. I am NOT saying this is the case, only pointing out that there's nothing illegal about exclusive contracts.

What makes us think that Amazon didn't pay for an exclusive contract up until now?

That being said, I'm surprised Apple would consider "slumming" their devices at low-brow stores like Target, given that their brand was established upon eliteness.

Lower-to-middle-class people enjoy having delusions of grandeur; that is actually Apple's key market! I don't mean to look down at Target shoppers (I've shopped there a handful of times myself) but the majority of Target shoppers are not wealthy, so Apple is actually quite smart to offer their products to Target.
