Beginner here help me build a sound system thanks!

so recently i purchased a pretty good sound card an asus xonar dx it will arrive soon... i was thinking of using it for my z5500 and wanted to improve my sound but people said my limitations are my speakers.. so here i am.

Atm i may keep my z5500 if the sound is pretty good but i have the urge to get some better sounds in my life..also do i need to upgrade my sound card.. higher than the dx? i do have the return policy of 30 days. I may sell my z5500 depending on how much this new system will cost also base on if someone will buy it.

What im looking for :
Dolby digital
DTS -yea sound card dont support so do i need to upgrade sc or just switch to onboard when i need?
5.1 - Yea i think it will take time to finally get the full 5.1 setup but what im hoping to do is at least build a 2.1 system first good two front speakers and okish speakers for the back since its only rear speakers.

Budget : 300-500

What im using it:
Computer setup, Games, Movies, Music, and etc... but mainly games/movies

To answer one question you've posted, it's better to upgrade your card if you really want to have 5.1 versus having to use on-board sound. personally a 2.1 setup with the proper equipment works very well.

Here's a thread that has some very good recommendations and will definitely help you out:

Good luck!

I personally like the audioengine A2 and their A5, very powerful speakers for their size and they cover a good amount of range. People have said they don't sound as well when trying to listen in a bigger room but since your a gamer like me these speakers are perfect since you're going to be around 3-7 feet from your rig.

Also as a gamer I use my headphones more when gaming and use my speakers when watching movies and listening to my tunes. I actually have the SennS HD518 which IMO are better than the HD555 since it has more bass presence and make explosions and gunfire sound way better. For movies and tunes, I use my Klipsch Pro 2.1 and they do a good job in my room.

Hahaha! I just have the A2 in my small living area and my Klipsh for my PC. The A2 is used when I watch Bluray and such outside while when I want to be lazy and watch stuff on my PC I have the Klipsch.

The A5 I listened to when I was trying to decide between the A2 and A5, it sounded better than the A2 it was just expensive for my budget at the time. The headphones I really had to get because when I play I usually play at odd hours.

You'd be surprised at the real audiophiles here at OCN, they have equipment up the wazoo which make my humble collection paltry.
