should i upgrade?

Thread Starter
my sig rig is about 4 years old or so and its still going strong, but i would like a new build and as a college student i really i have to be cautious of how i go out and blast my money.

anyways currently i have an amd 965 under water and i figure if i sell it locally with everything except for my HD and graphic card i could get 550ish, but see i dont know if its worth it because that 550 would go to an intel build and of course intel is expensive. I am torn between ivy i5 and sandy i5 or amd 8 core... back to intel how much would an ivy bridge i5 setup cost me vs a sandy? The other thing is that i want to overclock the chip so do i need to pick up a z68 z77 board? i though i heard somewhere that a z68 z77 board is required to overclock intel cpus.

so should i consider it or should i wait till the next tock of intel or should i just stick amd and leave it be for another 2 years?

Wait for Haswell and Broadwell as Ivy Bridge is nothing special.

But the most important question you need to ask yourself is, do I really need to upgrade? You will be north of $1000 for a decent Ivy Bridge system most likely. Does your rig suit your needs well enough now to justify a $450+ upgrade once you sell your stuff? I see countless people upgrade when they don't need to so. It really has helped me a lot.

Anyways, if you need to upgrade you can find some Sandy Bridge parts going way down in price. I believe MicroCenter or Newegg had an SB cpu for $150 on sale.

Even if it didn't(it does) I think you can pick up a Hyper 212 for 20$ while you're there and give yourself a little overclocking headroom cheap. I think if you buy the i5 at Microcenter they also discount a motherboard bought there, so that would help.($50?)

Sandy vs Ivy is a toss up depending on your luck, with a good Ivy Bridge chip it might end up faster, but you can't know what you're going to get.....(assuming you overclock them, if not the Ivy will be quicker)
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ivy-bridge-overclocking-high-temp,15512.html
"This extra heat is a huge drawback when overclocking, allowing Sandy Bridge to hit a much higher frequency and effectively matching the performance levels of Ivy Bridge. "

Graphics is usually one of the main expensive parts, without it this build is very do-able, and I could see a pretty quick system resulting.

I think if you pushed it you could get out of Microcenter with an i5 2500k build and have enough left over to get another 6870 used on this forum...... just be sure to get an crossfire capable motherboard.

yeah they are discounting 40 dollars off asus p8z77-v so its 90 dollars...v... and on top of that the i5 ivy is knocked down to 189 compared to 250 else where, but the 2500k is 169 so im looking at a 20 dollar difference between the two and i do not get the discount on the mobo. as for graphics my plan is to get a 660 or 670 or 680 when the time comes next year, the 6870 is more than enough for now.

Well then you have more than enough money to accomplish your goals(and i think the discount still works with the 2500k, but if not then the 3570k 100%), and if you're frugal you could throw an SSD into the mix to speed up boot time and a few games.

Or spend that small surplus on a better cooler or case or more fans..... lol

You are pretty close to the fairfax MC right? You should look into a 2500K and a Z68 mobo ($50 off when combo'd), Particularly the Asrock Extreme3 Gen3 board.
