should i upgrade? - Page 2

you should go with asrock extreme 3 gen 3 ( got mine for 119.99$ ) and a i5 2500k . the case you can keep yours . Subcut is right about the 212 evo cooler, really cheap and good.

I wont suggest the amd 8 core ( useless for gaming wish I suppose you do as a student ) if you want cheapest upgrade you can alway go for a 4 core amd ( the new gen I believe is 4.3ghz or something )

yeah i was there the other day getting a new keyboard... either way i look at it, its pay more for a mobo and get a 2500k or pay less for an asus one and get the 3570k... i really wish the reviewers out there got their hands on the i5 ivy so they could talk about the comparison with the 2500k. Ive only found one good comparason on bit-tech and they showed over all OC'ed and nonOC'ed the 3570k is much faster and the power consumption is much lower (something i would want) but the heat is a serious issue it seems. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2012/05/01/intel-core-i5-3570k-cpu-review/8

maybe i will not sell my setup with the watercooling and just build the new rig with my triple rad and a new waterblock.

at this point i want the 3570k but im just bugged by the heat issues.

Yeah I don't really see many reviews out for it, the only other one I saw they only managed to hit 4.6GHZ max on their 3570k. The temperatures were not too bad though, under 70C with an air cooler.

It's the only reason people saying the i5 2500k is generally about as fast, solely because it tends to overclock a bit better.

I am torn between ivy i5 and sandy i5 or amd 8 core... back to intel how much would an ivy bridge i5 setup cost me vs a sandy? The other thing is that i want to overclock the chip so do i need to pick up a z68 z77 board? i though i heard somewhere that a z68 z77 board is required to overclock intel cpus.
so should i consider it or should i wait till the next tock of intel or should i just stick amd and leave it be for another 2 years?

Long story short, No. Your CPU is still working (I have a 955 I still use). Yes you could get faster.. same could be said about your car, living situation, cloth's... You can always find a way to waste money on newer, bigger, better stuff. I would pick up a small SSD and a new GPU if you game and leave it be for another 2 years. The only reason I got an i5 was because I needed two PC's at home (one for me and one for the wife) and all but stole the CPU and mobo(not really, but it was dirt cheap!). Unless your into bench marking or need the e-peen/bragging rights your rig should be able to handle just about anything you throw at it with relative ease, I know my 955 still dose great in every application/game I use.

With a MC nearby, the 2500K + Z68 mobo will give you the best bang for your buck. The 3570K + mobo does not give a $50 discount.

I must admit this guy is right. ''No need for repair if its not broken ''
if you really want to upgrade : another gpu and ssd
post #17 of 28
Thread Starter
well i already upgraded my gpu this year from a 4890 to a 6870 and i picked up a vertex 3 ssd so i have a fast computer its not that i cannot play the best games, but i know that my only and current bottle neck is my cpu and if i plan to upgrade to a 7950 or 660 with in the next year i know that my system will be really held back.

also microcenter cuts 40 dollars off the price of the asus mobo if you get the 3570k so its 280

if i put the 2500k + the asrock its 250

so there is a 30 dollar difference is that not worth it?

i mean if i really want all i have to do is pick up a new mobo and cpu instead of selling my whole rig. but then i have to find a way to sell the 965 and mobo separate from the system.

I say go with the i5 2500k. ( *** I got mine for like 209.99 only the cpu ... )

But you should wait until you buy your new gpu to pay even less on the mobo and cpu. cause there is no way your cpu bottleneck your 6870 currently

The only people who will say its held back is elitist's. I have ran 6950 CF on my 955BE @ stock clocks. Performance was great... I refer you to my first post. You can nit pick your rig all day long, yea my sig rig is faster than my back up, but I can't notice when I play on them. after you do this, you'll need to upgrade to the next line of shiny new mobo's.. not to mention later this summer when when more new shiny parts promising faster performance come out... after that you can drop even more money on your rig around X-Mas time for that shiny new hardware.

The difference between my sig rig and my back up rig playing BF3/skyrim/name the game has never been more than 10-15 FPS(with the 6950's unlocked to 6970's in CF)... like that matter's when your pulling 100+ FPS anyway. I hope I don't come off sounding rude:D

The 955 (overclocked) will only bottleneck dual high end cards. But most people will not notice the bottleneck anyway.

What Asus mobo are you talking about?
