Maxed e5200 *UPDATED* GTA IV BENCHMARK

Thread Starter
Okay so I think I've reached the limits of my e5200 on this asrock board....

Stock e5200 (dual core processor) speed is 2.5 ghz.
I am currently at 266.01x12.50
so I'm at a 33% overclock @ 3325.10 MHZ.
My temps max at 65-67C. This is with the stock cooler fan.
Average temps are in the low to upper 50's.

This processor can go much more, too, I can tell. The G31MS won't let me up the voltage so that's what's holding it back.

My specs are
e5200 2.5ghz @ 3.325ghz
2 gigs ddr2 @ 333mhz
XFX ATI Radeon 4850 maxed out memory and gpu.
(you guys are going to love this one) 350 watt power supply out of a HP.
and I run skyrim and portal 2 and all sorts of things at 1080P with all gfx settings maxed out.

This is the best budget build I have ever had. That 350 watt power supply is holding in there too!!
Just know one day it's going to catch on fire or something haha.

Thought I'd share. Not on here too often but just in case anybody running a similar set up was wondering what it's capable of.

I got that same processor, before I made the switch from amd to intel. On a p45 board, I had it at 3.8 with the stock cooler, within 30 minutes of fiddling, 10 hours of prime later I was sold.

3.33GHz at stock volts, that's quite amazing. Have you ran any sort of stability testing to make SURE its stable?

And the reason you're able to "max out games" is simple. You're using DX9 since you're on Windows XP (as per your sig rig). Of course your rig can handle any game in DX9 mode. wink.gif

And not all HP power supplies are garbage either. A LOT of OEM units are actually made by reputable companies such as Delta or Seasonic. I've got a 250w Dell PSU that's actually a 250w RMS on the 12v rail Delta unit that handled my Q6600 + GTS 250 rig for quite a while.

Ohh sorry I haven't updated my sig, I'm actually on windows 7 ultimate (32 bit edition). Wow I haven't been here in that long haha. I have run Prime95 on it for 2 days with no problems, I've intelburntested it and done a few other stress tests as well.
I haven't done any of those stability tests lately though; to clarify
this machine has been running in this state for at least half a year now. I ran all the stress tests then, when I first got it to this point.
Had all my benchmark scores done too, but I haven't the faintest idea what they were.

I am trying to undertake getting gta iv to run on this machine at a playable level. it's the only game I've ever had trouble running. I've tried twice previously, once while I was running w7 x64. There was a huge compatability issue at that time, it ran terribly.
Once after on xp x86. no go on that either.

I've seen people running it on lesser machines than mine at decent FPS lately, maybe they have patched it a bit to make it more efficient, so I'm going to give it another shot.

In this ambition, i started to search for some recent info on the asrock hoping somebody had figured out some type of vcore unlock, but the game is still the way it was and it seems my machine is at it's maximum potential for the time being with this hardware, which led me to here!

Felt like just sharing the max specs I was able to attain.

Again this is on a windows 7 ultimate x86 edition. Stress testing has yielded no issues whatsoever.
I absolutely couldn't be happier with what I've gotten out of this processor and wanted to share the praise with others.
If you're broke and want a decent gaming computer, the e5200 is THE way to go. *still*.

FYI vcore maxes at 1.27.

AND this was my first ever build. smile.gif I had a good initiation into the world of OC. haha

Thought you may be on to something.

Off the top of my head...I'm not sure if the 4850 is a dx10 compatible card, so you may still be right with that, even if I am on 7.

Alright, Windows 7. You're still on an HD4850, so that's DX9 or 10 only. wink.gif Still not too terribly difficult to do with an HD4850. It's a solid card, I miss mine actually.

GTA IV you will NEVER get to run at a playable rate with a dual core. You need at least a triple core AMD or a dual core / 4 thread processor (i3) to get GTA IV to run playably, as it requires at least 3 threads to run properly. Yes, I know what the box CLAIMS the requirements are, but I tried, tried, and tried again with various dual core processors (Core 2 Duo and Athlon x2's), and I was NEVER able to get GTA IV to play well until I got a quad core.

EDIT:
By the way, this isn't meant as a "diss" on your machine. I'm rocking even older and weaker machines than that still to this day, and have no issues running them for gaming, HTPC use, or whatever else I want. See my sig HTPC02 build.

Oh no, no! Not taken that way at all lol. I'm proud of my little shi*box, it's doing me very well hahaha thumb.gif

Gonna look into the dx10 thing really quick. I'm pretty sure 4850 was right on the cusp of dx10 and didn't get it, so about the dx9 performance thing, I'm pretty sure you're right

And about the GTA thing, yeah, I've been reading into it and I can replicate your findings 100% based on other peoples experiences as well. They really did do a bad job porting that to PC huh?
I'm sure with a supermachine it does look and play phenomenal, but damn is it CPU intensive.

Nah really though, wasn't taken as a diss haha, I just wanted to share my findings, and to explain a little, I've been awake for about 38 hours now, so I'm probably rambling. A lot.. Anybody who's been there (i'm sure most of us have at one time or another) knows that at this point, it's almost the same as downing a couple six packs. I need to get some sleep lmao.

Thanks for the input its much appreciated and thanks for the props on my bare bones but still holds up with the big boys machine. biggrin.gif

*edit* Gonna update my sig real quick*

Well after our discussion, and all my searches lately in an attempt to see how it runs now, GTA IV runs remarkably well with all of it's latest updates + patches, and all my drivers up to date.

The in game benchmark log is as follows:
Quote:
Statistics
Average FPS: 41.77
Duration: 37.54 sec
CPU Usage: 89%
System memory usage: 85%
Video memory usage: 36%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1280 x 1024 (75 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Shadow Quality: Medium
Reflection Resolution: High
Water Quality: High
Texture Filter Quality: Anisotropic x4
Night Shadows: Off
View Distance: 22
Detail Distance: 11

Hardware
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
Service Pack 1
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Video Driver version: 8.17.10.1119
Audio Adapter: Speakers (SB Audigy)
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz

File ID: Benchmark.cli

This is, again ,with all the latest updates and drivers on my system and for the game itself.
Following is my log from my last attempt to run this game (Didn't do so well)
Quote:
Statistics
Average FPS: 22.19
Duration: 37.44 sec
CPU Usage: 92%
System memory usage: 91%
Video memory usage: 75%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1280 x 720 (59 Hz)
Texture Quality: Low
Render Quality: Low
View Distance: 32
Detail Distance: 69

Hardware
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
Service Pack 1
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Video Driver version: 8.17.10.1099
Audio Adapter: Speakers (SB Audigy)
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz

File ID: Benchmark.cli

As you can see, CPU usage and resource usage is down. The patches do make the game run more efficiently.
The older (slower) benchmark was done at a LOWER resolution with the GFX turned all the way down as well.
Quite a substantial improvement.
So if anybody has tried to run GTA before, and wasn't able to, give it another shot with all your updates.

If that's just regular GTA IV (aka, not EFLC), then you need at least 60 FPS for the game itself to be playable. Reason being, when you're actually IN the game, the framerate is nowhere NEAR what your benchmark shows. You could be getting 41 FPS in the benchmark, but in the populated city with explosions going on, you'd be at 12 FPS. Been there, done that.

If you want a TRUSTWORTHY GTA IV benchmark, then use GTA IV: EFLC. That benchmark is with you in a helicopter and you're blowing stuff up in the populated city. I get about 80-90 FPS in the regular GTA IV benchmark. In the EFLC benchmark I get about 40-45 FPS.

No EFLC benchmark to run, but been playing the game all day (And modding it like crazy. WTC mod is AWESOME) and from personal experience it's definitely playable. I don't remember the exact settings in the graphics menu (their names) but the top texture option is on high, all the other low, med, high, very high options are set to medium
Each 0 - 100 slider is set at 30
4x anti-aliasing
1280x1024 resolution

and it only gets choppy when there is like a stupid amount of things going on, but thankfully those stupid amount of things going on moments go by quick.

With fraps the lowest framerate I've seen it dip to was 19 and that was only for a split second.
It averages 28 and It maxed at 39.

So it's totally playable. I'm psyched.
3rd time is a charm I guess haha.
