i5-3570k doesn't want to OC...

Thread Starter
I'm using an Asus Z77 Extreme 4 mobo and an i5-3570k. I had it on auto voltage until 4.2GHz, and decided to change the voltage to fixed for beyond that. I change my voltage to 1.25v and it freezes at the desktop at 4.3GHz... what? I tried all the way up to 1.3v. Still freezes and BSODs. 1.3v BSODing on 4.3GHz?? What? Other people I see are clocking 4.5GHz at 1.25v and under. Those are the only settings I changed. What could be wrong?

Edit: Idle at around 28C at 1.3v

I'm a little confused. I think it kept crashing because I jumped too high at first instead of going up little by little. Now I'm at 4.4GHz and I set my fixed voltage to 1.3v.. and it stays at 1.3v idle but during a prime95 blend it drops to 1.22v? How does this make sense? Does that mean I'm pushing too much voltage and it doesn't actually need that much?

Now every time I run Prime95 blend I get an error Windows Defender stopped working and the usage drops down to 75%. Would this be from lack of voltage or what? I never saw the voltage go to 1.3v which it's set at though it stays around 1.25v

The volt drop from your mobo might be why your getting those issues, i never overclocked on a gigabyte mobo but check your LLC settings and increase them. You need to keep the voltage stable, If you cant correct the volt drop you might need more voltage to compensate the required volt under load.

voltage drops due to v-droop as mentioned above, you need to set LLC (load line calibration) somewhere around 75% or high, not to max, then ya get v-rise which is bad for the cpu cuase it spikes real nasty on un-load...cant see that with any program though.

umm 1.3 sounds a touch high for 4.4 on ivy, see if you can get it stable with a little less voltage like 1.2 to 1.25, it sounds like its throttling due to really high temps, what do you use to monitor temps?

[EDIT] the 212, even the evo isnt all that awesome, especially when dealing with an ivy(really hot), 4.4 may not sound like an awesome Oc, but compared to sandy its about a 4.6 to 4.8 OC depending on APP/game.

good eye on the cooler. Im afraid to touch ivy and I have an antec 920 with 2 radiators lol Its ipc is GREAT though

Thanks guys I changed the LLC and it's been stable for 2 hours at 4.5GHz w/ 1.28 volts. Highest temp reached was 86C. I'm happy with these settings and I think I'll keep them for my 24/7 OC
