It's all about immersion bud! You have to get into the game!

I once got a good hiding by four blokes in a grave yard! They thought I was someone else! And they were acting like they were just about to kill me!
And I remember at one point, two were holding me up and the other two were trying to knock me out! boxing3.gif
But that still wasn't as scary as some PC games biggrin.gif

I'm thinking I found it less scary getting beat up because of adrenalin, and the fact I'd lost my temper!
Whereas playing a PC game, you're in a much lesser state of aggression. And so the scare gets to you more thinking.gif

I don't understand how any of you can find any Dead Space game scary. I also can't understand how anyone can play Penumbra or Amnesia, they are both slow and just boring.
I've always liked Fatal Frames, haven't played it in years, so I don't know if I'd have the same reaction to it.

Stalker is much more of a 'creepy' game with such an atmosphere of desolation and such a feeling of alone-ness in certain parts ... it just kinda 'gets to you' after a while. Not to mention you feel pretty outmatched a lot of the time, at least on your first playthrough before you get good at the game.

The first FEAR is also a lot like Stalker in this regard, although it also clearly has parts 'meant' to scare you, it also creates a lot of unease with the atmosphere and the alone-ness factor. That one definitely 'got to me' a few times. FEAR 2 didn't though, not in the same way, even though it tried a LOT harder.

Honestly though 'how scary' a game is has a lot to do with your mindset at the time you play it, as well as your environment.

I happened on to what's regarded as the 'scariest' part of SoC (i.e. lab X-18) at about 1am, in a cabin in the mountains, alone, lights off, with the game cranked up on surround sound speakers.

No game will ever actually 'scare me' if it's daytime outside, and/or there's people in the house with me.

BTW, how the hell can anyone hate Prey? That game is friggin awesome, in my top 5 all time FPS games easily. It's not scary though, except perhaps the 'nursery school' area.

Yeah I don't see how anyone can find Dead Space scary either. As for Penumbra/Amnesia, they're slow but never boring in my opinion. The atmosphere always draws me back to them and the story is intriguing. The puzzles are well done and I like the gameplay; it gives you various ways to deal with enemies, except for killing them of course (excluding the first part of Penumbra and one level in Amnesia). Amnesia's sequel is coming out this year, I can't wait.

Metro 2033 is probably the scariest game I played. Can't handle the sudden appearances of these mutants sadly, the setting looked very promising.

The first Dead Space creeped me out, never really scared me. Visceral Games does a good job with atmosphere. The last game to scare me -actually scare me- was Resident Evil. The dogs jumping through the windows scared me as a kid.
