2 Cards In SLI Possible Airflow Problem?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am thinking of getting another gtx480 as they're very cheap now but I was wondering due to the fact the cards are in very close proximity would the top card heat up as there is no place for it to suck air in?

And would I be able to overclock the cards? I was thinking of running them at stock but Is overclocking an option?

Regards and thanks,

Bump after 24 min? maybe wait a little for some of the members to come online.. most are sleeping now.

Any way, yes the top card will get a little hotter, it shouldnt be much of a problem if you are not planning on massive overclocking. If you are using custom PCBs with custom coolers, make sure they can be next to each other without them hitting one another.

Regards and thanks,

Yes you can overclock, but with multiple cards you run into cooling problems.

You may or may not run into cooling problems, see if you can get a reference blower style card for the bottom card (the second one). This will help alot, you may also want a 120mm sidefan in your case. This helps your graphics card(s) run alot cooler which in theory will be quieter. Even with single cards you will see a big drop in temps.

That or you could always get an aftermarket cooler.. rolleyes.gif

Also make sure you have a gap between them and they aren't stuck together like so..

EDIT: I do realise that in the case of the three way SLI the user has no choice which is why 2 way is the best for most users. Seeing as a watercooling loop would be alot more efficient then reference cooling for 3 way SLI/Crossfire.

What I did with my setup, is buy an aftermarket color for my top card, because that thing was reaching peak temperatures. It took like a month in CFX before it started warming up though, and I have a decent amount of space in between.

PCB to PCB it's about 2 an 3/4 inches about and PCB to HSF it's about an inch about.

But when I put in my acclero twin turbo, the top card with the twin turbo actually ran cooler than my bottom card, which is very strange, but trust me, i Quadrupled checked to make sure. Even under load my top card ran cooler, and my bottom card has duals fans on it stock.

I setup 2 6950s in CF for a friend of mine. One was a reference design, and the other was an MSI twin frozer. (or something like that design).

At first I made the mistake of leaving the Ref. design on top, when running Unigine the temps were about 65 on bottom, and up to 85 on the top card.

I switched them around, and the same test they both ran at 65. Same results in Batman on Ultra settings.

My point is, putting two 480s together is going to be hot as hell. If you really want to, try and get the best non-ref card you can. I also hope you have space between them.

assuming this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157263 mobo then just use the top red pci E slots and you should be fine.

Gives you a one slot space between the two which is good enough for most dual card setups.

480s are HOT cards though, and I would definitely recommend installing a pretty good flowing side panel fan on that Antec 600 of yours. Do that and you should still retain some overclocking headroom.
