Dude... Catch a Nidoran, have it learn Double Kick and then breeze through the first gym. Pokémon 101, fighting moves are super effective against rock.

I had both red and blue... I honestly didn't care which, but I'd rather see the world through a blue tint than a red one, unless you really want one of the version-specific pokemon.

Actually you can change the tint in both games. I don't remember exactly how it was done but I thinks it was by pressing B and up or down to scroll thru the choices while the GAME BOY text was showing on power on. You could do all kind of color combos like green/blue tint yellow/brown and of course you could make the BLUE version have the same red tint as the RED version.

This was my backlight, and it worked damn good.

Pokemon red had charizard, blue had squirtle, yellow had pickachu. Silver and Gold each had a rare pokemon you could catch. All can be played on a GBC.

I very much enjoyed Blue (and Yellow), but never had red, so I can't offer a comparison or why. I don't think you'll be unhappy either way. Also, get a GBA if possible... much easier to hold (or at least this was the case when compared to a GB pocket).

EDIT:

I was going to buy a GBA on amazon used, but most have descriptions like "screen is scratched" or "missing battery cover" ect... I went ahead and spent 20 dollars more and bought a DS for 40 bucks. Opens up alot more game variety aswell, including emulaters for old consoles if you research it.
