Problem cooling phenom 955

Hey guys

The computer in question is mainly used for movies and music but has recently been used for BF3. I'm not sure about the specs, will add them later but the cooler is a scythe with a slim 100 mm fan because of close to no extra space in the small lan case. The mobo is a mini atx.

It seems as though the mobo does not understand to increase the speed of the fan when the cpu gets hot. It looks like it is spinning on lowedt possible rpm even when the cpu temp is close to max, and after a few rounds of bf it crashes. Is there a way to possibly fix this?

I have tried the following things;

-replaced TIM with as5
-updated drivers for the 4850
-tried to force the fan to 100% with speedfan with no luck
-ran bf with whole case open, still crashed
-fail safe defaults in bios

The cpu is not overclocked and the cpu fan is connected to the mobo with a 4-pin connector.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you checked if there are any fan/Temp options in the BIOS?

As stated we need more info. What is the cooler in question, Scythe "something" is too open ended. It could be a good cooler or it could be junk. What fans on on said cooler? Are they PWM?. What method did you use when applying TIM? lots of people use WAY to much, when to much TIM is used it acts as a thermal insulator rather than a Thermal interface marital.

You said the CPU is at stock clocks, did you set the BIOS by hand? or did you leave it on "auto" settings? Lastly, you have not mentioned what temps it was hitting. A screen shot of OpenHardwareMonitor or HardwareMonitor would be very useful in this situation(I perfer OPHW, more options). we need moar info smile.gif

There are some fan options in the bios and one of them says that if you disable it them the fan should run at max speed all the time but it does not.

What do you mean by vrm overheating?

Ok so here are the specs:

Ambient temp around 20 degrees celsius

Phenom 2 x4 955 BE
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-UD2H
4GB DDR2 800MHZ
Radeon hd 4850

It appears as though the c1e/speedster option (amd though, cant remember what it is called) enabled because the core voltage jumps from 1.040 to 1.4 and the core speed from 800 to 3200 mhz.

Could the problem be that under load it puts too much/more voltage than needed which causes it to overheat?

I'm about to test bf3 again and see how long it lasts before it crashes.

1.4 is way too much. My Phenom I's stock is 1.3.

That is because you have a different phenom. stock Vcore for a 955BE is 1.40v

@OP: CE1 is not the reason your clock speed and voltage are raising and lowering, that function is called AMD Cool N Quiet. It will lower the voltage and clock speed when at idle or doing things that don't require full CPU power, as the usage go's up and you need more CPU power to accopmlish tasks the Vcore and multi will raise to full clock speed. this is perfectly normal, and at stock speeds should cause no issue what so ever. I even have my 955be @4.0 GHZ stable with CnQ on but some people cannot get a stable OC. You should download

HARDWAREMONITOR
or
OPENHARDWAREMONITOR

You still have not posted your core temps. Please do so, this issue might not even be related to CPU overheating, could be anything at this point.. literally anything! So you should DL one of the above programs and then leave it open for a while, surf the web(no gaming just yet) and post a "snip" of the program(windows 7 feature/program). Your maximum temp is 62c (143f) but for overclocking stability may become an issue at 55c or so.

AMD955BE's are VERY cool running CPU's at stock, it would be kind of hard to overheat it. Post back with the above info and we will get this sorted! Best of luck.
