Photoshop on the other hand seems like I just moved out of my 16 year hometown into the big city. I recognize a few tools and filters in the UI. The big thing about it is having to learn somethings that I could do already in GIMP like zooming with the scroll wheel as one example which you can't do in Photoshop.

Anyways, its nice to have a new version out.

Actually, you CAN zoom using the scroll wheel in PS. You just have to hold Control or Shift or Alt (I forget which one).

All mouse/keyboard shortcuts are customizable anyway. I just changed the alt+mousewheel shortcut so it adjusts brush size instead of opacity.

You guys are just reinforcing my point. Having to learn something to do something that you could already do in another program.

The difference is only one key.
Photoshop default - Alt-Scroll Wheel
GIMP default - Ctrl-Scroll Wheel

No is your answer. Nobody has to learn/memorize/modify shortcuts. Enhancing functionality and productivity doesn't apply to everyone.

The meaning of "gimp" differs depending on the region. I don't personally know anyone who would use the word in reference to a person. Instead, it would be used as an adjective and almost always to describe an inanimate object. Something that is "gimped" has been artificially crippled. That has nothing to do with being a moron.

Does that make the name any better? No, not at all. In fact it reinforces the idea that the name has universally negative connotations. However, the degree of negativity varies drastically, and you can't assume that the developers understand it to mean the same thing as you do.

Finally, branding is everything. GIMP is a (relatively) well-known application, and well-known names have reason not to change often. That said, if they are going to change it then the earlier the better.
