Weird Laptop New Battery Problem - Please help me!

Thread Starter
A relative of mine has an old laptop that he wants to give to his child to learn PCs.
It is a HP OmniBook XE3 laptop Pentium 3 64MB Ram running Windows XP.
It sucks a lot but it doesn't matter as it's going to a 6 year old child.. Now to the point.
It's battery was a bit worn so I decided to purchase a new one from ebay.

The manufacturer's battery is : HP F2024a lithium-ion battery module 11.1V 5400mAH
and on the side there is a sticker saying this : F2024-80001 Rev 00

So I got in ebay and purchased this one :
Battery

It arrived yesterday and it has written on it : Replace : F2024-80001A DC 11.1V 7800mAh/87Wh
though in the ebay item description it says 6600mAh. I believe it doesn't actually matter, the bigger the better.
Only not sure if the laptop's charger unit can fully charge it..

I plugged it in and it started charging... and after a few hours I noticed that it was stuck on 22% and would not go any further..
I decided to test its battery life at 22% by simply playing a file on repeat on windows media player with the visualization on, on both batteries.
So comparing to the old one and the new one I got these results:

The old one fully charged at 100% kept the laptop alive for 42 minutes and then entered hibernation mode.
The new one charged only at 22% kept the laptop alive for 40 minutes and then entered hibernation mode.

Yep both lasted almost the same.. I tried to recharge the new one again.. it charges fast but it won't get past 22-23%.
So what do I do? Return the battery as defective or keep it because the laptop can't handle anything more?

Some more details on the laptop and the power supply.
The power demand as written under the laptop is : INPUT : 19V DC 3.16-3.30A
The ac/dc adapter of the laptop says the following : INPUT : 100-240V ... OUTPUT 19V 3.16A LPS
and its model number is this : HP f1781a ultraslim ac/dc adapter

The problem again is that the battery charging won't go anywhere above 22-23% even after several hours..
Please guide me here because I'm out of ideas.. frown.gif

Be vary wary of ebay batteries. I got one for an old Dell. It would hardly charge at all. As soon as I would unplug the laptop, it would die within 5 minutes. Try to find an official battery, not a cheap knock-off.

It actually wasn't that much cheap.. You can't find original anywhere as the laptop is like 10 years old. And a replace costs about $65 in my country while this one I got on ebay cost me $38 and is at "New - Sealed" state.. Also as you can see in the link it is from a good seller who has 11627 (99% Positive) feedback which is good enough and as I see in his feedback almost everyone is happy with the batteries they purchase. I've sent him a message stating the problem. Doesn't anybody think that the laptop's charger could be a problem?

Maybe the battery needs calibration, you could try to fully discharge the battery and then charge it. Go into BIOS with the battery and let it stay there until it shutdowns, then try to recharge.

Your power supply shouldn't have a problem charging a bigger battery. What is needed to charge a battery is a voltage above the battery's output, amperage determines the time it takes.
What controls the charging of the battery is inside the laptop (sometimes there is a button on the power supply that turns on or off battery charging).

I am a little concerned about the increase of the capacity of the battery. Maybe with the increase of the capacity they unintentional increased the required charging voltage, exceeding what the voltage regulators inside your notebook give. That's why it might stop charging when reaching 22%.

Or it could just be a defective battery. smile.gif

Maybe the recalibration does it.
I had a battery that shutdown without warning at around 40%. After recalibration the discharging percentage was working more smoothly, the battery was failing but at least the laptops usage was more normal.

You can also download HP Battery check and see many characteristics for your battery(fully charge and disconnect power supply when testing).

Take a screenshot and post for both your batteries, if at the end nothing works. Maybe we could help further.

Edit:Updated HP Battery Check link with newer version.

It somehow worked but in a really messed up way.. I tried to let it run until its empty in bios but it took hell of a lot of time..
So I decided to enter windows and see how much is left.. And then something really akward happend... It showed 0%... but it
was working.. I set the media player to play an mp3 with visualization on and it kept on playing for more than half an hour
and I left home. When I cam back after a few hours it was shut off and wouldn't turn on on batteries. So I turned it on
and set it to charge.. and now it's up to 40% and it's still climbing..! I'll see how it goes now..

By the way I told the seller about the problem and he suggested me to return it to him so that he sends me a new one.
But if it works this way then I will avoid the extra shipping and time expenses.. smile.gif I hope it goes all the way up to 100% now!

If you see from the screenshot above, those batteries are not just batteries but there is also a controller inside that keeps statistics for the battery.
The controller is what communicates with the laptop and sometimes it's not synchronized with the levels of the battery cells.
Or maybe the circuit inside the battery has been taken from an older battery and put together with new cells.
A recalibration usually fixes that.
Please post a screenshot of HP Battery Check after it charges up, would like to see what stats it has.

Well it worked pretty fine! The battery charged up to 100% and its battery life is ~5 hours. while playing an mp3 file using media player with alchemy visualization.
I still haven't tested the battery chek program. Not sure if I'll actually make it. I'll have to deliver it to its owner tomorrow. Thank you for your help! Rep+ done.. smile.gif
