Is windows 8 free?

Thread Starter
So I recently bought a new computer and don't want to pay $100 dollars to get windows 7. I even contacted the microsoft store for a student discount but they only give that for the upgrade version which is pretty dumb. Do I need an already existing version of windows to use the windows 8 preview or can I install it onto a completely new machine with no existing OS? Thanks in advance for any help.

As far as I know the Consumer Preview doesn't cost anything. If you want to use it for your everyday OS, go for it. It will probably eventually expire mind you.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview is out and yes you could install it on its own but why?... Just get Ubuntu if you looking for a free OS.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview is just that, a preview. There are still bugs, and if like the Windows 7 preview, it will expire and quit working around the time Windows 8 (Final AKA RTM) is released.

The Windows 7 Upgrade can be installed as a "fresh" install, just google how to do it.

It's free, as long as you don't use it in a "live operating environment", so you can't use it to demonstrate stuff to a crowd. It is scheduled to expire early next year.

You can do a fresh install or upgrade, but I'd suggest not using the iso on the M$ site as it has quite a reputation for not working. Instead, use the installer (also on the M$ site) and download the files using the exe. After downloading the files, you can create an iso image, upgrade your existing installation or create a bootable flash drive. Just be warned that if you upgrade, you won't be able to "uninstall" Windows.

When upgrading, the stuff you can keep are as follows:

XP: Files (documents, music, etc)
Vista: Files, programs
7: Files, programs, settings (everything)

Windows 8 is fairly stable, and in my case comparable with win 7, but keep in mind that it is still a beta.
