Thanks for the input amtbr!

When you say spacing, how much are we talking here?

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7225/img0023lb.jpg

I found this online, and basically were I to CF my cards I would have similar space in between them.
Still ok with two Twin Frozrs?
I do have quite a bit temperature overhead, but I'd rather not have the fans on both blaring away.

That picture looks OK, sorry I am lazy right now and can't take a picture of mine, but I have more space between mine. However, I wouldn't stress too much about getting the maximum distance because if you get another TFII, it should do a fine job in cooling. It also depends on how hot the ambient temps are as well, if your computer is in a really hot environment, then I would be concerned. If not, you are good to go.

I run my top card at 60% and the bottom one at 65% There is a wooshing, but I play with headphones, so it doesnt really bother me. These cards cranked up dont sound as bad as a stock card. Crank yours to 60-70% and see if it bugs you.

I am running 6990 with unlocked 6950 on a motherboard without Nf200 chip, (8x, 8x) playing in eyefinity, no strutter.

Crossfiring on PCI-E (x16, x4)
X16, x4 vs. x16, x16

For what its worth, I am running CF 6950s at 16x/4x and I don't notice any stutter. I game at 1920x1200. I play all the major games, BF3, Skyrim, etc...I dont see any stutter. Each person has their own subjective view on this, so my experience from yours may differ. When I first realized I couldn't run both cards at 16x or 8x I freaked out and almost bought a new motherboard, but I realized I don't see any stuttering different and in benchmarks my results are only marginally different from similar setups. So to met it wasn't worth the cost of a new motherboard, the hassle of installing new drivers, etc...and to this day I don't see any stuttering.

One thing you REALLY want to consider is the spacing of your cards, you really don't want them sandwiched together, especially in a small case like yours. Mine have as much room in between as my motherboard allows and they run great, both are very cool.

Most games do work with crossfire, AMD drivers get a lot of flack but generally speaking they won't give you much trouble. I was constantly upgrading and switching drivers, trying betas, etc...but I realized just stick with what works and stop fiddling with them and things will work well.

I suggest you get another Twin Frozr, you may be able to find a used one here on OCN.

Are you sure you are running Crossfire @x16/x4? What mainboard are you using? It says i7-920 DO ASUS P6T in your sig rig. I couldn't find P6T edition that has only 2 PCIe @x16/x4.

Ken, positive, I would take a GPU-Z screenshot, but Im too lazy. I have the P6T, the bottom picture. Unfortunately, ASUS did a really stupid job of designing the dual 16x slots, the two blue ones, as the cards cant even physically fit next to each other in those slots. So my only option is to run 16x/4x.

What I was trying to say, LGA1366 X58 has a total of 40 PCie lanes while OP's LGA1155 P67 has only native 16 PCIe lanes.

Oh well, hope OP will have time to do more resarch before jumping on the infos provided here.

Hello guys,

Thanks for all the tips, it is appreciated. Any more is always welcome!

I wanted to be sure before I commit, so I am going to be testing a friends 6950 (TWIII) in my rig, and see how it goes. Will post when I see some results, should be next week at some point.

Ok so finally getting around to following up - I went ahead and got the refubed 6950 from Amazon (about 200 bucks), the card itself works just fine.

I am happy to report my setup is for the most part working great! No stuttering issues despite the bandwidth limitations (and any stuttering that exist in games for other reasons, are easily fixed with the Afterburner OSD FPS caper + vsync, why does AMD not recommend this stuff biggrin.gif ) , and in fact I have yet to encounter any unexpected issues at all.
It does take a little tinkering for some games, but that was to be expected.
There is of course the annoying issue of some games (like World of tanks) getting nothing from Crossfire and others (Bad company 2) having some occasional weird visual issues with crossfire, but on the games that I got the 2nd GPU for (Metro 2033, Stalker Clear Sky Complete, Empire and Shogun total war) I am pretty much across the board seeing some healthy increases in frames.
The only game that continue to elude me is Skyrim, which Crossfire seems to add nothing to (though I get no issues like many have encountered either, so can't complain too hard.

Despite the cards being so close in my rig, they still idle very low (40 for bottom card, 45 for upper card, and thats tops) and hours of gaming don't see the top card go above 70 degrees.

So, fears aside, I am pretty happy with the setup, I got about what I expected. I wish some game devs would take a little more care with Crossfire support.
Aside from that the only issue is actually finding games I want to play that I need the extra horsepower for.

Thanks to everyone for the comments,
TR1

Hello,

I have GTAIV, and have always have absolutely crappy performance with it....both before I had the second GPU, and doesn't seem much better with it. Lowering settings helps barely until I get very low indeed. Any tips? What settings do you use?
I have heard a lot about the game being terribly optimized for PC, but you seem to be doing well with it.
-Thanks!
