How to better cool my Geforce 9800 GT - Page 2

Replace the TIM, now!

Wipe it clean with alcohol, dust everything, put new thermal paste on it, and bolt everything down tight.

Your card is running at 105c. 65nm cards (hell, any GPU) will die from that temperature, and quickly... this is not something better case ventilation or external fans will fix. Stock 9800gts should run 30c cooler than that.

I've seen 8800GTs run that high even after reseating and applying fresh TIM. Not exactly sure what the actual cause is, but the fan clogs up and doesn't freely spin. Sometimes the thermal pads don't make proper contacts with the RAM and VRMs.

Unless you can get a VF900 or Duorb for like $25 or less, then it's not worth it. Because for $50 you can get a better, more efficient and cooler GPU.

I will take a pic tonight, and the fan runs at 100% under load. I tried one of my low profile fans last night and the card idled at 163F but I couldnt run load on it seeing as the fan dosnt adjust its speed to the load like the stock fan on it.

Sorry the Bump, bit i'm curious about how it went for OP. I just pulled an 9800GT from my server and is going to build a oldie pc with it. And it's running pretty hot even after a TIM change so would like to see how you lowered yours temps OP. smile.gif

Make sure there is no dust on the card or in your system, and install new thermal paste on the card. Do you know what the temps of your cpu are?
