High temps with only a slight overclock? Hyper 212+

Thread Starter
So I recently got everything in, put together, and up and running, and I decided to overclock slowly for the best results. Well I set the 2500k to 4GHz on the dot, and the overclock is there, but my idle temps on immediate boot are roughly 35C and max at about 40C after running for a bit. I'm using Tuniq TX-2 for my TIM and the CPU cooler is a Hyper 212+. I've seen people with a stable overclock of 4.5GHz with max idle temps ~25C. For applying the TIM I did two small lines on the bottom of the cooler, and then spread it out evenly. The 212 rotates if I put pressure on it, even though it's as tight as it goes, but I'm pretty sure that's a common issue. Should I reapply, reduce voltage, or get another cooler? Or what, I'm kinda confused so help me out tongue.gif Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Also, first time overclock by the way, so yeah, noob alert.

You want to worry about load temperatures, idle temperatures are essentially meaningless.

What is the ambient - the air temperature of your room?

Hovers around 70 - 72F so roughly 21.1 - 22.2C. I havent loaded it yet, as for high idles might indicate higher loads, or I could be wrong. Like I said, first time.

run prime95 to make sure your overclock is stable and monitor the temps using hwmonitor or Open hardware monitor

I have Real Temp as of now, that's where im getting my temp readings from. I cant do a prime95 run right now, but I will after school tomorrow, what's a decent time to run it for. Call it stable after 6? Or should I do 12?

Ok. If your cpu is idling there is NO load, idle temps are temps at 0-3% CPU usage. Your TIM is probably messed up too, just take off the cooler and do one pea sized dot in the center of the cpu then gently set down the cooler and tighten with your fingers until everything is snug. In general the cooler your using is not very good for overclocking past 4.5 Ghz. And 35 - 40C with the overclocks your doing is JUST FINE. Only worry if LOAD temperatures go above 80C.
Your fine, just re-apply TIM.

Ok, so I got home from school, and I'm running 4 threads of small fft, and so far at 10 minutes max temp is 58C. So it's looking good to me so far.

EDIT: Also, fans havent even ramped up to 60% yet biggrin.gif

EDIT2: 30 Minutes, Max temp was 61C

So I went ahead and upped the clock to 4.5, and I've got the voltage at 1.35, could probably drop it to 1.3 but we'll see. Running prime95 small fft again. Topping out around 72C as of 10 minutes. Hows that sounding?

Quite good for a Hyper 212+!

1.35v at 4.5 is a little high, try lowering the votlage and rerunning p95 for stability.
