Honestly, I'm figuring this is why AMD allowed Nvidia to launch the GTX690 first. AMD probably wanted to know exactly what clockspeed they had to hit on the 7990 to win the crown.

I remember seeing a TPU graph showing that on average the 7970 is 6% slower than the GTX 680.

If my math is right that should mean that they're both completely equal right now at stock.

I heard whispers about this... was actually thinking about this card just a second ago. Good to see they're actually going through with it. Wondering what power consumption will look like though. If they bin these well, we could see some fun overclocks.

The 7970 and 680 are pretty much equal clock for clock on average, with certain applications favoring one over the other. The 680 is definitely the better performer per watt though.
