[Atomic MPC] AMD gives the 7970 a boost (to 1GHz) - Page 11

Interesting, how about AMD release Open CL 1.2 and MLAA 2.0 in the next WHQL, then they would be great in my book, sick and tired of using Beta drivers to experience what these cards can really do.

I wouldn't say it's clever, but it's playing their same game.

Don't forget that this makes the 7970 almost match the GTX680 in gaming.

In computing performance it already destroys the GTX680.

It is kind of funny that AMD is doing this but I don't really have a problem with it. 6% slower on average then the 680. This will bring them right in line. Not sure why they are all that worried about it but hey. A lot of people like to argue endlessly about the two cards. Enthusiasts already know the 7970 is the card you want if your into overclocking and the 680 is the card you want if your a set it and forget it type guy.

AMD is trying to cash in on the GTX 680 and 690 hype by making their cards more attractive. No one can get the GTX 680 or 690 right now, so all AMD needs to do is pull a couple strings and make some sales.

This should do it. Except for power consumption, this should put them neck and neck with the GTX 680.

There is a bit larger 8% performance advantage with HD 7970 CFX versus the GTX 690, but that is negated with the smoother feeling SLI has in gaming compared to CrossFireX. Even with an 8% performance difference, it would be hard to recognize one as being faster while gaming.
Quote:
For this second graph we wanted to compare at a non-memory intensive setting. We find performance between GTX 690 and GTX 680 SLI nearly identical. Radeon HD 7970 CFX is slightly faster, but not enough to make any difference; and we certainly still prefer the smoothness of SLI.

Indeed thumb.gif. Now if I could just get my K/D Ratio above 1.0! I sucked in the beginning, still playing catch-up. Almost there

so easy to get your KD above 1. just hide behind the corners and stay with the pack so you have a medic rezzing you all the time tongue.gif

even though I can only overclock mine to 1.2 and paid original price, I'm happy with the 7970 for now, and this 1 GHz is great for people who are scared to overclock thumb.gif

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Nvidia sacrificed a large part of its computing performance just to compete with the HD7 series. Clock for clock the cards are pretty much equal even when the gtx 680 has the advantage.

It looks to me like 'big' kepler is going to be a seperate product from their gaming line. In fact I'd tend to think that the next gaming GPU is going to follow in the footsteps of the 680 and be small and efficient.
