[Atomic MPC] AMD gives the 7970 a boost (to 1GHz) - Page 13

I've had numerous driver issues with my 7970's in Cf but they were almost all a result of trying to unlock voltages and overclock using third party utilities. At stock using just CCC I haven't had any real problems with any of my games (Crysis 1, 2, Warhead, BFBC2, BF3, MOH, Portal, Metro 2033). I do know that there are specific DX11 issues with CF and Eyefinity but most users don't run that kind of setup...

When I have an Nvidia card I have game optimizations coming out months before the game does. When I have an AMD card I don't see anything til after it's released. It's a shame to because AMD has the best looking reference design out there and the hardware is quality.

AnandTech stated AMD would be spending a lot more resources on driver devlopment and developer relations this year:

We've seen a bit of this already, actually: the photoshop performance improvements and AMD's partnership with PTC.

Obviously though, the drivers still need work. I'm hoping May's release is a big one... their driver team has been very quiet and I really hate it when they're like this. May will usher in the 2000-4000 series cards being put on legacy status, so hopefully this will allow AMD to focus on their driver issues for current generation cards.

I'd imagine most people don't have many issues. You know how it is though. 1/10 is dissapointed and everyone hears about it. Again not to say that Nvidia drivers aren't better overall though.

Heck I am having a flickering problem right now with my 580s that I absolutely cannot seem to get rid of. It's driven me so crazy I'm not even trying to fix it anymore. Still though they obviously put out quality driver software.

Running my 3 lightnings at 1125/1700 and have no issues at all with afterburner and unlocking voltages (thou im sure having cards by msi help). Bf3 is butter and since i have a 120hz monitor i needed to stay above 120fps at all times. Bf3 runs 64 player games on capsian boarder with an avg of 160 fps-170 fps so scaling is perfect.

The only timd i had trouble with crossfire was when i was to dumb to realise i hadnt activated 3way cf in ccc lol

The only trouble I've had with 7970s in crossfire (2x MSI 7970 Lightnings @ 1205/1800) is with The Witcher 2 and Skyrim. Skyrim is a bit buggy and has some negative scaling in CF, but it doesn't really matter for me as a single 7970 already pushes out 60fps reliably so I just leave CF disabled there.

The Witcher 2 is a bit more disappointing... by default, it will crash all the time with CF 7970s and CCC 12.4. Once you figure out how to stop that, then you realize that CF doesn't scale reliably throughout the game with ubersampling enabled... sometimes it's buttery smooth 55-60fps with 99% GPU usage, other times it's about 10fps with 27% GPU usage... frown.gif

Hoping AMD fixes that.

Good to see they are raising clocks... I have no idea why they released the 7970 at 925 MHz originally... it's a stupidly underclocked level for the card. I've only heard of a couple 7970s that wouldn't do 1100 MHz on stock volts... I dunno why they don't bump the clock all the way up to that, and it needs that kind of bump to compete with the 680 at resolutions below 1600p.

Well now that the GTX680/690 are out, and they appear to be in general, faster that the AMD architecture, and markedly more power efficient (I'd assume quieter as well though I don't own either), the line from camp AMD is that they can simply increase TDP, which is what Nvidia was previously berated for. My how tables can turn wink.gif

But still, Tahiti is power efficient. It's also good at compute and equal (if not faster) clock for clock with the 680.
Fermi was something else. It would hit 95C and use more power than the 5970...

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5699/nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-review/19
And about power consumption. If the card uses 20-30W more under load, will rising to 1GHz at stock voltages (1.175v) really change anything?
And I'm pretty confident my 1GHz / 1.05v 7970 uses less power than a 680.

this is what people forget about fanboys, i can get my GPU stable at 1250MHz on air, with a small voltage bump.

these cards OC very well.
i said my card is a bad OCer, then i realized im just bad at OCing GPU's

Well to explain it to u since u seem to confuse "moar cores" with clock speed. It is shown time and time again that the 7970 and 680 are pretty much clock for clock identical in terms of brute power. Since the 680 is clocked effectively at 1058 at stock (with boost speed being the used top speed) this just puts them side by side interms of pure performace.

Unlike your attempted comparison with bulldozer and intel sb/ib, this is a completely legitiment move on amd's part.

Nice try at a sucker punch but with 8,000 plus posts i would like to think u could troll a bit better than that. Thou it was a good try retired mod, but u need a lot of work to catch up on the trolls on this website.
