Choose what you want say what you want the 680 is a great gaming card. thumb.gif
Plug and play, no hasell.

I think a response in kind is in order here:

"I can tell you that my buddy got 1350 MHz on 1.25V on both of his 7970s without much trouble. HW shows thousands of submitted entries for 7970s and it bogs down the average with people who don't know how to OC properly and doesn't mean squat... get over yourself dude most 7970s OC like crazy to 1300 MHz and beyond."

Also, there's almost 700 GTX 680 submissions, not 70. I'm not saying that the 680 is a bad card, I'm saying that you are making things up that you cannot back up with facts. You are allowing the exceptional to determine the normal.

Well, Shogun 2 is my most played game, along with bf3, Skyrim, GTA and crisis, so I'm going for the 7970, mainly because in the most demanding game, (Shogun 2) it beats the 680 by a good 10fps or so. Also, considering a can get a 7970 lightning for cheaper than a 680 by a good $30, I don't really think there's any.other option.. Also, I might go with 3 23 inch 3d monitors.soon, so the 3gb will help

Personally there's one thing people seem t be forgetting and that's IQ!

That is the single and most important feature that I look for, I've run so many AMD cards over the years and one of the things that always bugged me was the ability to run transparency anti-aliasing in DX9 games only, Nvidia added support for DX10/11 when they released the GTX 400 series and it always bugged me that AMD could not offer the same as there was loads of DX10/11 games that I played that really needed transparency anti-aliasing.

So I sold up and moved to SLI GTX 470's, while I was loving the fact that I could now force transparency anti-aliasing in all the games I wanted to one thing I did notice was a big drop in anti-aliasing quality, it was just simply not up to the quality I was used to on AMD cards.

But now AMD have finally added transparency anti-aliasing support for DX10/11 as well they now have and offer the best IQ there is!

AMD's edge detect anti-aliasing mode is leaps and bounds above anything Nvidia currently offers.

Anyone with an AMD GPU should have anti-aliasing set to 'Adaptive' and 'Quality' in the CCC!

I would really suggest that you check benchies for skyrim and bf3 (bf3 w/ 4x msaa) before you finalize your decision and hit buy, in the very least check ones for skyrim. Those two are my most played games, skyrim probably being my favorite. smile.gif Good choice of games, imo.

I never said the 7970 was a bad card merely pointing out to those that have said how much better the 7970 is are inaccurate. If it was superior AMD would not have had to come down on the pricing retaining king of the hill GPU. They compared well against each other and if I could link the 8 tech review site that back me up from my iPhone I would.

That's all. Meant no disrespect to the 7970 in the least.

@Arizonian

I'm saying that the cards perform the same when overclocked. Some of your assertions in this thread about the average 680 OC ability would, if true, suggest that on average a 680 OC > 7970 OC when in reality - on average - they are about the same. You can always get the exceptional card here or there that OCs like crazy and will beat the other card's average OC soundly.

1. Neither company has good support for any MSAA variant in Dx10/11. Not even half the titles out there support it properly. Forcing it doesn't mean it's goign to work and in most games it doesn't. Both nvidia and AMD's support for it is laughable and is a stain on both as far as I'm concerned. What's the point of a 500 dollar card if I can't force any kind of AA in Witcher 2 or Crysis 2 or any of the hundreds of other examples.

2. Luckily however if you look at my sig Inspector offers an AA hack that's equivalent to supersampling and works in pretty much every game. AMD may have slightly better out of the box support not but it's still awful.

As an aside writing that guide and having basically no one respond to it kind of showed me that most PC gamers don't actually care about IQ. Pretty ironic when you think about it. THere's a guy on this forum who's convinced for example that you can use MSAA in Human Revolution. I've tried explaining to him you can't but he's convinced. I'm unsure really what to think about it. I can't imagine why some of you spend 1000 dollars on GPUs and are happy with FXAA. Most people are dumb though so it's whatever I guess. I just find it ironic that people complain about console gamers and low standards when 90% of you adhere to the same thing.
