Best GTX 6** or Radeon 79** card for Pyrit / Folding / etc?

I've been trying to find out what the best cards for Pyrit would be. I know any of these series of cards would be great for gaming and that will be my primary purpose for getting either one of these series of cards (preferbly in SLI or Xfire) once I get back from deployment but I also want to use the cards in question for distributed computing either with Cuda or Opencl (Pyrit, Folding, Bitcoin.. etc)

What would be the best card for these purposes? Currently I am considering these cards for a new hex/oct core build in the next 4-5 months or so:

2x GTX 680
1x GTX 690
or
2x Radeon 7970

I plan on getting a higher resolution monitor as well and I already have 3D Vision materials, just a side note.

I am willing to consider which would be the best price to permorance choice but I'm also looking which would have the best in terms of raw power. Does anyone have any benchmarks for these cards in terms of Pyrit or Folding? I know the 6970 beat out the gtx 580 in Pyrit a ways back but these 6** series cards seem to have a lot more stream processors which seem to make a lot of difference when it comes to distributed computing.

I'd love to hear what you guys think, and if any of you are linux guys with some of the hardware in question I would be very greatful if you were able to run some simple pyrit benchmarks wink.gif

I would go with 2 x 680 for raw power

For folding .. Nvidia > amd

But it might be different now ?

Cheers mate

The 690 is basically 2 x 670-80's downclocked , i think ..

So out of all mentioned cards the 680's will be superior for what u want to do , cuda , folding and bitcoin .. aswel as gaming of coarse

because you will be folding , a dual gpu card will pack alot of heat without a good cooler so 2 individual cards with their own coolers would be the best way if your going to torture them .

thats my 2 cents .

the Nvidia gtx 680 is amazing, it fast, but it dosent do well with computing like folding at home, and also Nvidia is better at F@H, and AMD is better at bitcoin, how many PCI slots do you have?
Your going to hear mixed stories from every direction , id stick with 2 x 680's respectivly . They will pack a massive punch , dont worry about the marginal gains amd might have over nvidia in bitcoin that could just be a myth .. Any proof of that ?

It used to be different in 2009 / 2010 but what about now ?

F@H is definatly better on nvidia cards , not so sure about bitcoin or pyrit i have never used either but i do know the 680's are the best cards out the moment so theres nothing really to compare it to .. 7970's are the same thing but with crap driver support like usual ..

Next time round im going nvidia , that tells you what i reckon but im only a gamer so ..

here, its a bit older but it looks like that ATI/AMD out performs nvidia on pyrit

With the GTX 680, GPGPU isn't as good as previously because it's made more for gaming now than compute use, for instance, the GTX 680 performs worse than the 580 at compute in LuxMark. AMD has also greatly improved GPGPU performance with the 7900 series. Personally, I would go with the 2x 7970 option. Source

thanks, really good find! I remeber seeing this once and certainly AMD pwned NVIDIA w/ pyrit, I wonder what the difference with the newest gen is...

hmmm if this is the caseI may lean towards ati, the 7970s would certainly be a bit cheaper and net a lot of the same performance

Theres nothing wrong with 2 x 7970's

680's have more raw power though , but by the looks of it the 7970's might suit you better for direct compute which is specifically what your looking for so its a no brainer . I always though nvidia was one step ahead of amd in this department but i guess im wrong .

In gaming situation the 680's are the clear choice .

Goodluck .
