Kind of a dumb question really, but do I need a power cable for the HDD and optical drive along with the SATA connectors for my motherboard?

separate sata cables but you may be able to share the same power cable if it has two molex connectors

There are two cables connected to your SATA drives. One is a colored one, fairly thin, and connects your HDD/SSD to the Motherboard, the other is a little wider in the end and is connected all the way to the PSU (power supply).

yes. you need power cable and a sata cable for every drive you have. power goes from the power supply to the drive and a sata cable goes from the motherboard to the drive.
