Windows 7 professional key with Ultimate disk

Thread Starter
Quick question. If I use a windows 7 professional key to install windows from a W7 ultimate disk, will it automatically not-enable the features of ultimate or do i need to use a proper W7 professional disk?

Thanks.

Pro key won't work on a ultimate disk.

Yes and no.. technically every windows 7 disc has the .wim files for every windows install (home premium, starter, pro, etc.) I am not sure though how you would get it to recognize a pro product key. If you have access to a windows server you can use WDS to extract the .wim file for Professional and then use the WDS to install windows but that is probably more work than you want to put into it.

If I am not mistaken - only an enterprise key will work across all non-home versions of windows 7, other than that, you need to use the installation media that matches the key.

One of the best investments I make on a yearly basis is to my MS TechNet subscription smile.gif

^^^ This - To add to this - in addition to, you can also use Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to do quite a bit in this area as well. This is how you can match up the key to a specific .WIM

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I'll probably end up downloading an iso from sean's guide.

If you do not want to download a copy just use your original disk... here's how I do it copy all files from the DVD to a USB drive formatted in FAT32 once this is done enter "sources" folder and remove ei.cfg file and you're done. You can choose what version to install Starter, Home, Pro, Ultimate

Thanks.

Product key needs to match installation media.

What you can create an ISO the the Ultimate Windows 7 disk remove the ei.cfg file and then burn the edited ISO to a disk. And you now have a Windows 7 disk that allows you to choose what version of Windows 7 to install (from Starter to Ultimate).

More details on that are found here: http://lifehacker.com/5438005/eicfg-removal-utility-lets-you-use-any-product-key-with-your-windows-7-disc
