Cisco 1841

Thread Starter
I was just given a working Cisco 1841 Router? from work. It's got one expansion card in slot 0, and a 32mb Cisco branded compact flash card in it. Anyone know what this thing is worth? And how could I get some use out of it at home?

We don't delpoy 1841's anymore not sure if they are end of life, but we definitely don't use them.

Could be cool in a home lab with a couple of different WIC cards for using different interfaces such as serial or rj11.

Beyond that they aren't worth a whole lot these days I don't think.

Would be good in a lab environment for studying for Cisco certs or general knowledge.

You could probably get a couple hundred bucks for it on fleabay.
Or no, no it's not worth anything, I'll be doing you a favor by taking it off your hands wink.gif

I use one of these on my desk, After learning a good amount of CLI, Its been set up as my home router.

The customization you can achieve is phenomenal, however using CLI has a learning curve, and then figuring out what YOU can do with it is totally up to how much you want to learn.

I would start with this text:

http://www.amazon.com/CCNA-Portable-Command-Guide-Edition/dp/1587201933

very straightforward, walkthrough commands to acheive tasks, has a little bit of theory in it for you to soak up as well. If you end up liking it, Grab a Wendell Odom.

1841's are the routers currently being used by the Cisco Network Academy in its CCNA curriculum.

They usually run between $199 and $250 on Ebay.

Price its usually based in the amount of memory and flash.

Unless you plan to do some reading on how to configure a Cisco Router using command line then you're gonna have a hard time figuring anything out.

P.s: Why don't i ever get stuff like that handed to me also frown.gif

I just got really lucky lol. I never get cool stuff for free. But I work security at a newly closed hospital and they were about to throw out a LOT of good hardware. I got plenty of good loot from there haha.

Well thats cool. If you are interested in learning basic Cisco IOS look for Danscourses in youtube. he is a ccna instructor in a comunity college and records his classes and uploads them. Pretty cool guy and explains stuff really well or if you are serious about it check your community college as they usually offer CCENT classes during summer time or you can go for the full CCNA course.

Good luck.
