Best 3D positioning program for stereo headphons? CMSS-3D? Dolby headphone?

Hi, i've been searching this all day and i cant find a straight up answer. I dont care about music quality, amp power, other features etc. I want to know which Surround sound to stereo converter for headphones will work best for a pair of AKG701/2's. It seems to be pretty evenly divided between dolby headphone (found on popular ASUS sound cards) and CMSS-3D (found on Creative cards from my understanding) and please correct me if i'm wrong. However after much searching it seems there is a slight lean that favors dolby headphone for movies and CMSS-3D for gaming. Not sure if this is placebo due to the each comapanies background in each department but i'd like to know the truth. Which surround sound to stereo converter is better for gaming? ill buy a sound card (or mixamp) solely for that reason and run my music to an external DAC. thank you

-Sean

Having used Dolby Headphone on a CMEDIA8788HD card (almost same chip as ASUS) and CMSS-3D on a X-Fi Titanium, I preferred Dolby Headphone for gaming.
I couldn't get CMSS-3D to sound good positionally. While turning your avatar head, all the incoming sounds were very directional.
Testing was on ArmA2 1-2 years ago, not sure how far things have changed today.

did you have your pc sound settings set to surround sound? and by too directional do you mean accurate..? because to my ears sound accuracy is a good thing, thanks.

Don't exactly remember. CMEDIA one was setup as 5.1(6channel) or 7.1(8channel) on Dolby Headphone. X-Fi not so sure.
With too directional, I mean that you if have a sound left and near, right ear wouldn't have the expected volume.
You would expect a small difference in volume.

I have also a TRITTON AX PRO with true 5.1 speakers. If I used Dolby Digital Live 5.1 for both cards they would sound pretty much close.
Dolby Headphone or CMSS-3D disabled, but good directionality for both cards.
I would have to guess that something wasn't compatible with CMSS-3D (ArmA 2) or CMSS-3D wasn't good enough.

Everything is a personal opinion. I am using now Logitech G930 for gaming and I am super happy them.
TRITTON AX PRO were my second favorite but its Dolby Digital to analogue converter sucked, if I find another DD to 6 channel analogue I might try again sound cards.

Alright say I were to use AKG Q701's for my gaming headphones. I couldn't run them plain off of a mixamp. If I ran the mixamp signal through another more powerful headphone amp would it ruin the signal/positionin of sounds?

The only way that the sound could be altered is if your amp applied any enhancing sound filters (like virtual surround, theatre, hall, etc.), nothing if only amplification is done.

I too have the same question. This is my setup at the moment.

XBox > TOS cable > Astro Mix Amp > 3.5mm male to male > Object 2 Amp > AKG Q701 headphones.

I think maybe the mix amp is miss wired because no matter my setup, I have better position when my Dolby Headphone is turned off then when it is on.

There is no single software solution for your problems. Most games these days use OpenAL library for sound processing CMSS-3D implements OpenAL access among other things. The best way to get positioning information with stereo headphones in those games is to use a Creative or ASUC sound card with CMSS-3D support. Another possibility is instead to buy a software implementation of OpenAL with virtualized surround support in it. One such driver is called Rapture 3D. This could work for those who have laptops and such. Note that not all games rely on OpenAL for sound programming. For example, Urban Terror 4 has an implementation of the engine with its own implementation of HRTF in software, but you need to download third party binaries.

Yeah? It sounds grand and all but doesn't help me. Also I noticed this post is over a month old so it doesn't apply to him anymore.

From my limited experience, I would have to say that I prefer Dolby Headphone over CMSS-3D headphone.

I seemed to receive much better directional cues from Dolby Headphone than CMSS-3D. With DH, I could always tell exactly where sounds where around me (I would close my eyes and spin around). With CMSS-3D, I had a much harder time identifying where a sound was coming from, and a couple times, I was actually wrong.
