Best 3D positioning program for stereo headphons? CMSS-3D? Dolby headphone? - Page 2

I'll sum it up: CMSS-3D is far more realistic, Dolby Headphone is 'cheating' at times because it does not account for elevation cues or say, walls. Yes, you really can 'wallhack' with sound. It's quite evident really.

You can blame Creative for stagnating good directional game cues in sound, and Microsoft for sending it into intensive care.

Can you elaborate on the differences between CMSS-3D Headphone and Dolby Headphone?

Also, I was wondering, does CMSS-3D Headphone use a 5.1 source to make a special 2-channel signal in a similar way that Dolby Headphone does? Or is there no benefit to having a 5.1 source with CMSS-3D Headphone?

You definitely can wallhack and I loved that about my card when I had it.

What does it mean to wallhack with Dolby Headphone??
It means that basically as Dolby Headphone does not account for environmental variables (such as walls), you will hear a person on the otherside of wall as with there was no wall, thus the 'wallhack'.

The differences between CMSS-3D and Dolby Headphone is that CMSS-3D is based upon 'head related transfer functions', in other words, how objects in the environment, such as your head, the shape of your outer ear, walls, affects your perception of a sound.

Dolby Headphone is based upon a virtualised 5.1 surround sound setup in a room (and is to be honest, outdated and inferior to other solutions). However of course, Dolby has very strong connections and support over many media.

Lots of technical stuff summed up in two sentences.

So basically whereas CMSS-3D is basically you in the room with walls blocking sound as they normally would and echo of footsteps etc loud in your corridor..you can't hear people on the other side of the wall well..

Meanwhile with dolby you can hear through walls where people are. Great tactical advantage.

Are you serious?

Ok, what if you are playing with straight-up stereo? I imagine that it doesn't take walls and whatnot into account, right?

So CMSS-3D does some additional processing on the sound which takes the game environment into account? Sounds like EAX, no?

I think this thread is mixing EAX in with CMSS, without additional information about the environment CMSS can't do anything special.

I wish someone could completely de-mystify DH and CMSS-3D Headphone for me
