Hi, I am interested in reading some opinions from others who may have tried this setup. I have an HIS 6790 IceQ 1GB GDDR5 card, and I have noticed that it is not a very popular card. I paid about $150 about 7 months ago. It's been a great card... never had a problem with it.
Now I finally jumped into an EyeFinity setup, and I like it. I tried to run Battlefield 3 under Auto settings (which for my machine is everything set to "High") like I had been doing all along with great success on one monitor. The resolution was also set to 1920x1080. Zero lag or problems on one monitor. As soon as I had the EyeFinity set up, it was tons of chop. The first thing I noticed is that when I would click through the menus it would not even acknowledge that I was making changes. My weapon wouldn't appear on the screen at respawn either. Total laggy nonsense.
Naturally my first instinct was to turn down the eye candy and lower the resolution. I have it now set to 1600x900 per monitor. Minimal change in clarity, but a huge increase in performance with EyeFinity. I also turned the eye candy down to "MEDIUM". This is a temporary fix for me. I can still tell that there is a lower level of performance now versus the one monitor setup I had before.
I am considering buying a second HIS 6790 and running it in Crossfire. Or I could buy a 7000 series card and skip all that, but the cost difference is large. I can get a 2nd 6790 for about $135 right now, versus buying a nice 3GB 79xx for $400. The 7900s say they are 384bit and the 6790 I have is 256bit. Also 3GB versus 1GB X 2.
One of the other reasons I am asking, is because I have read that a lot of folks are unhappy with their PC when they Crossfire it. I think people have high hopes like me. I want to be able to play all of these games with the highest settings and not worry about the chop.
Here is my current setup:
Cooler Master HAF X Full Tower Case
MSI 890FXA-GD65 ATX Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 Thuban Black Edition 1090T CPU @ 3.2GHz
HIS HD 6790 IceQ 1GB GDDR5 Graphics Card
8GB (4x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1333 RAM
250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM HDD
600W Apevia Power Supply
22X Samsung DVD Writer
3 X Asus VS228 21.5" LED 1080p Monitors
ACCELL Active Mini-DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Obviously I would also upgrade my PSU if I purchased a second card (maybe an 850W?). I am also on the hunt for a nice gaming mouse because the one that I have now is getting me killed. I am also thinking of upgrading the RAM to 16GB (4x4GB). Any advise from those who have been in this boat, I would appreciate. Thank you!
