Updated: Had 6790, Bought (2) 6950, sent back for 7970 -- Best Idea ever - Page 2

OK well I just got off the phone with NCIX and I guess I'm going to send it back. I figure it will take a week to get my money back and up to another week to get the newer card.... sigh. I hope this pans out well. If the difference in performance is minimal I really was not interested in sending it back. Its going to cost me 15% restocking fee which is about $37.00

That restocking fee sucks, sorry to spark all this, just wish we would have caught you sooner. You won't be sorry with a 7850 or 7870 especially over a 6950. The 6950 was a bit of a let down in terms of a high end card (unless it unlocked and ran stable as a 6970) The 570 and 580 just pummeled it.

If you did order a second 6950 and crossfired, you would be using something like 300 watts with the two of them Vs. a single 7870 which would use about 150 and give you similar to the two 6950's in crossfire.

You still have the option to send back the 6950 right? or is the restocking fee set in stone?

My understanding about crossfire is you take advantage of extra GPU processing power and VRAM. Wouldn't 4GB over 2 cards be at least just as good as 3GB over 1 card? Memory clocks aside

Honestly if you are gonna spend about 420 on cf cards anyway just get the GHZ edition or sapphire OC 7970 for 480 on newegg, it is the fastest single card solution with Catalyst 12.7, yes even faster at stock then a 680 and it overclocks like a beast.

My recommendation
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102982&Tpk=sapphire%207970

quiet and comes with a bios with a slight oc already to GHZ edition specs.

Also vram isn't additive, if you have 2 2gb cards you have 2gb, the same stuff has to be stored in each card so you end up with the same, in the case of a 1gb 6950 and a 2gb 6950 you will only have 1gb total because it scales to the lower cards specs.

Edited to reflect what Bruflot pointed out, realized I had a bit of confusion in my post. biggrin.gif

The VRAM is mirrored, not added. But honestly, a 7950 will not beat 2x 6950s, that's just BS.

2x 6950:

1x 7950:

7970/7970Ghz:

@UpgradeSolution;
You are partly wrong with your answer. A normal 7970 is not faster than a 680, but the 7970 GHz edition is.
That's quite a difference right there..

Herp you are right, its the GHZ edition with 12.7, I was mistyping if you look though the card I recommended is to the same specs as the ghz edition and the OC bios is the ghz edition one. Thanks for pointing that out biggrin.gif

@bruflont did you already buy the Retina MBP or are you in 3 weeks the 1st how is it if the second why is it so bad you want out of it?

I didn't mean you would have a power shortage issue, I was simply speaking from a performance per watt standpoint. Two 6950's would about equal a 7950's performance and use way more juice.

@bruflont did you already buy the Retina MBP or are you in 3 weeks the 1st how is it if the second why is it so bad you want out of it?

I haven't bought it yet, I'm hoping to be able to order it next week, and then 2 weeks estimated delivery time. I need it for iOS development, as I'm limited to Android with a normal PC.
