GTX470 vmem speculation

Ok so the time has come at long last to upgrade my monitor. Yes I know its sad that I am rocking tri sli on a 1680-1050 but what ever rolleyes.gif I plan in the very near future to move to 3 dell u2312hm's and thus bringing the question will the mem on my beloved 470's be enough to drive that many pixels? Has anyone played with the 470's to know how they preform at high resolutions?

I would image that the ~1.2 GB of vram would affect it in some way. To what extent, i do not know.

Tri-SLI 470's has the raw GPU grunt to push that amount of pixels, however on some titles you will end up having to skip the MSAA in order to fit the game within your memory envelope. Conceivably you might also need to drop SSAO and/or texture quality as well in some very rare cases.

Fortunately there's now FXAA built in to the nV drivers that I know works on some games at least. This type of post-processing AA, while not as 'good' as MSAA generally, doesn't require any extra vram.

Bottom-line, cards with more vram would be 'better', however to match that amount of raw processing power you'd be looking at needing at least 7870's in Crossfire or thereabouts ...

Thank you that was what I was thinking but I wanted some other opinions before I sunk that much money in these monitors thumb.gif

You would be better off selling all 3 and getting a 680.

I say don't even sweat it. Your new monitor setup will GREATLY be a larger upgrade than going for a higher end card. And no, a single GTX 680 is actually a downgrade from 470 tri SLI.

I see no reason you should worry about 1.25GB of VRAM either. Very VERY select few titles will definitely fill that up and then some. In that situation just drop the AA and I'll bet that's all you'll have to do. GTX470 Tri SLI is still a VERY potent setup today.

I know the 680 is slower but 1.2GB just won't cut it. BF3, SR3, skyrim all use over 1000MB on my 470's with one screen.

I'm at 2560x1600 with an HD7970 3GB. You'd honestly be surprised at how little VRAM you REALLY do use in real gaming situations. A lot of the time, just because its using that much, doesn't mean it NEEDS that much to play and be playable with good framerates.
