The vast majority of players spend their first 10-25 hours getting stomped (less experienced players might spend even longer), and the maps are huge, complex, and take time to learn. Same with the gun mechanics. Planes and helis are certainly easier to learn, but still take time to master. The fact is its a team based game were for the most part strong team work will trump a team of pro lone wolfs. That said players can become particularly strong at certain roles with lots of practice and the skill ceiling is more than high enough for a large scale team based game.
Compare this to MW3 were a player can start coming in first place after just a few hours.
People can keep whining because its not as hard as bf2, which I agree, but I don't think that makes an easy or poor game.
Don't mistake this post for me claiming bf3 is perfect, its not, but its not an easy to pick up run and gun game either.

If you insist. Perhaps we have different definitions of "coming from a long history of..." but as soon as I hopped into BF3 it was a breeze. There were a few things that took me a round or two to fully grasp, but that's certainly not hundreds or even tens of hours. With the exceptions of actually-working bi-pods, tactical-sun-in-a-bottle, and the suppression mechanic, everything else in BF3 have been common features of pretty much every other FPS that I've ever played for a decent length of time.

I guess it all depends on your gaming background. I've got a clan buddy who's always amazed that the weapons aren't hitscan. Personally, I can't think of any game I've played that doesn't have proper projectiles. From my perspective, I'd be more lost and confused in a game without all those "unique battlefield features" or whatever you want to call them - they're natural to me, and when they're NOT there, that's when I notice.

From my perspective, BF3 is very point-and-shoot. Very small. Very arcade. Very easy to lone wolf run and gun to victory. Whenever I'm playing alone (as in not with my clan full of CoD converts) I play HC mode just cause I find all the silly glowing grenade icons and what not to be more distracting than helpful. Begin forced to aim down sights makes the game more fun for me as normal BF3 is so easy to run and hip fire that I often find myself doing nothing but that and still placing MVP every round.

EXACTLY!

Activision recognizes the millions of gamers that enjoy Call of Duty. It would be stupid of them to go the route of Valve (which is one of my favorite companies) and force their fans to wait years for their next game. I like when a company innovates but I hate when they innovate by destroying what made the original games so popular. The engine is dated but that is really the only revamping needed. I'm the same way when it comes to Left 4 Dead. I'd love for Valve to release a L4D3 with the same/new/all female characters and a new or continuing story. I enjoy the gameplay of the first two and it is the same with Call of Duty fans. If people enjoy Call of Duty that is their opinion. Why change what your fanbase enjoys?

It is the other companies that are trying to make the next big CoD that are to blame for not listening to the masses that want something different.

As much as I don't like CoD, I have to agree entirely. Too many companies try to reinvent the core of their games instead of improving on it's strengths and purging it's weaknesses.

I love innovation, but I also HATE when a beloved, unique franchise kowtows to demands of some fringe players and totally changes itself into something that no one ever wanted. At that point, why even carry the franchise name?

BF is going down that path. GW went off the deep end with it. C&C and Supreme Commander are already old news. Tribes has been in a state of constant limbo between trying to reclaim a spark of it's old flame while still trying to appease the new crowd of CoD players. Lets not even mention every single flight sim... ever.

Destroying the strengths of a franchise and scaring off all it's original fan base is not a great idea. I get that companies want to cash in on what's popular, but in the long run they're burning all their bridges and putting their fates in the hands of gamers who have never even heard of the franchise and are more than happy with whatever is popular in the first place.

I cant stand games with personal perks. I want more games where you either win as a team or lose as a team. If you lose you get nothing. If you win you win.
I think the personal perk and achievment systems have ruined most games nowadays online, especially FPS.

Completely agree. I hate what TF2 became. It transitioned from being a team-based game to a circus of a game. We'll probably never see games with regular multiplayer again. They'll always have these stupid personal reward things added on.

Well, they kind of have to try to be a COD killer. COD sells a lot, as this chart shows. Those sales cut into other games' sales. COD is the #1 competition for more reasons than just its stagnation.

I agree, but I think people (game devs in particular) need to realize something. CoD sells to CoD fans, and friends of CoD fans. For all it's popularity, CoD had never sold well to demographics that enjoy unique games, or even games with different play styles, just like those games don't sell well to CoD fans.

Trying to make an "innovative" or new game, and making a cod clone, are simply mutually exclusive. Dev's shouldn't try to push their games into the CoD crowd because it simply will not work. If it's too similar, people will dismiss it as a poor clone and just play the REAL CoD. If it's not similar enough, that demographic will not be interested anyway. Instead, developers should be focusing on the demographics which actually enjoy their games.

Sadly I agree. It's a mainstream industry though. The majority no longer cares about quality. At least, not like the former majority did.

I understand, but that's not the way corporations think. You can't simply ignore a demographic; it's bad business.
