[TT] NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 670 2GB Video Card Performance Preview - Page 17

I say this because Fermi was bashed left and right when the GTX 480 could at most beat a 5870 by 10-15% easily, but required like twice the amount of power to do so. And yes, people absolutely DID mind how hot and power hungry Fermi was, and the 5870 was arguably the best bang-per-buck AND price-for-performance card; it was arguably the "smarter buy." Even though the 480 took the performance crown...hmm... wink.gif
I just think it's funny to see people justify that power consumption and heat isn't an issue now if that card offers better performance, but in the era of the GTX 400 series vs Radeon 5000 series, power consumption and heat were the very first things people commented on when choosing one side or the other. wink.gif
EDIT: grammar.

I'm sorry, did you just try to compare the power consumption and heat output of the GTX 480 with the 7970??? lachen.gif The 7970 uses a whole 20-30 more watts than a 680 and is a fairly cool card itself (especially in comparison to the 480 vs. 5870). What a stupid analogy... doh.gif

Where in my post did I mention the 7970? The 7970 analogy doesn't even apply here because it cannot beat the 680 by 10-15%. I was merely commenting on the concept of heat and power consumption mattering far less now than it did in the GTX 400 vs. Radeon HD 5000 era.

double standards sure, but the comparison is far from as drastic. we're talking a huge difference in power/temps/heat. downright nasty it was. it made sense back then. now it's just payback time and it's a small difference in every category.

Nice try but you were clearly alluding to the fact that people in this thread are saying they don't care about power consumption in regards to the 7970 vs. the 680. That was the point of your analogy saying that people don't care this generation about power consumption when they did last generation. My point is that the 7970 is no where near the power hog that the 480 was so your entire post was kind of pointLESS. thumb.gif

If I wanted to compare the 7970 and the GTX 680 with the previous generation in terms of power and heat, I would not have purposely omitted using the two cards as an example in my post. My grasp on the English language is decent enough to where I can say exactly what I mean using the words i've actually typed out.

You're assuming i'm making the analogy out of a sense of fanboyism...so please, don't try to tell me what I was trying to say. The point is, heat and power consumption mattered back then, and while it was more drastic, it still mattered far more than whoever walked away with the best performance even at the cost of that power consumption and heat. In this generation...that seems to no longer be the case. But hey, regardless of how I explain, i'm clearly knocking on the 7970, because, you know, I totally mentioned it in my post and I totally used it as an analogy, even though, again, it cannot beat the GTX 680 by 10-15%, period. thumb.gif

I don't think people cared about power consumption nearly as much as you think. People that wanted the highest performing card bought it. I know I did anyway. I had two 480s and two 5850s and the 480s were easily a better gaming experience.

Anyway like I said if the 7970 had shipped 150mhz faster like it easily could have it would have higher power consumption but again it'd still be fairly low and I think the fact that it'd be slightly faster would make people not care all that much.

If you weren't comparing power consumption standards of last gen to this gen then your post was completely irrelevant. Just say what you want to say and stop parsing your words. The 7970 and 680 are almost equal in terms of performance clock for clock and they are within 30W of power consumption between them. Saying you don't care about power consumption this generation makes total sense because there is so little difference between the cards. To have even brought up the 480 vs 5870 in this context is laughable...

You must not have been around OCN enough back in 2010 - people definitely DID care a TON about power consumption and heat. If the PC hardware enthusiast world had its own Twitter-trending-topics ticker back then... "heat" and "power consumption" would have been the top two trends. They were literally dragged into pretty much every thread involving the 5000 Series/400 Series.

Obviously, 2010 is not comparable to 2012. But it's surprising to hear more people clamor for more performance at the expense of power consumption and heat, since this was definitely not the case a couple of years ago. Again, i'm not making any analogies to certain products; i'm talking about the idea as a whole. I'm not arguing against the 7970's power consumption, as I do not see anything wrong with it, period.

Maybe AMD fans acted like they cared. The 480 undoubtabally outsold the 5870 by a good margin though so again I don't think many people cared. Otherwise it would have shown in marketshare which has been trending Nvidia's way basically since after the 9800pro launched.

Oh and also Eric is like a huge Nvidia guy. You guys really have no idea.

I have to say though as someone who has been told I "ruin Nvidia GPU threads", am "an Nvidia fanboy" and I "hate Intel" all within the span of the same week I'd imagine that people just don't like contrary opinions.
