[TT] NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 670 2GB Video Card Performance Preview - Page 18

Dude chillax. Not everybody is mesmerized by a better stock performance when most people here factor in how they OC as well. If you wanna grab a 680/670 and think it "demolishes" a 7970 just because its clocked higher at stock then go right ahead. Just don't be surprised when somebody with "paper weight" 7970's comes along and embarrasses you... wink.gif

The funny thing is that most reviews post games like Hawx 2 and Mafia 2 as evidence. Not even kidding Tweaktown is using HAWX in their reviews. I'm sure the justification is it uses tesselation but it's still ridiculously easy to run and literally no one plays it. Games that should be tasted are games like C1, C2, Metro, Bf3, AvP, Batman, Skyrim etc etc. A collection of Dx11/10 and recent games that works your system. Coincidentally out of those games which are all easily in the top 10 hardest games to run the 7970 wins about half of them. Even at stock. No review site 24 it doesn't really concern me that the 680 is 30 frames ahead in Dirt 3 when they're both over 100.

Of course everyone is going to OC, and yes, people will be factoring in OC performance once the 670s are actually released. But that's not even what matters here.

What's interesting here is that the rumored price of the GTX 670 is $400-415.

If that's the case...that poses a HUGE threat to the 7970. If i'm AMD, i'm literally going "what the frack" right now, especially if i JUST lowered the price of my flagship card down to $480 like 3 weeks ago to compete with the GTX 680. If the 670 launches at $400...I really don't think there's any way AMD can counter it or recover from it until the 8000 series. Or unless they release a 7990 for $800....but we've seen absolutely no signs of that at all.

It's one thing to factor in the performance of the 7970 OC'd, but we also haven't seen the performance of the 670 OC'd, and if the price difference is $50-80...it would be hard to justify going the 7970 route unless it had a VERY decent margin of performance ahead of a 670, stock vs. stock or OC vs. OC.

We also need more benchmarks for sure, since TweakTown is so broke, that they can't even afford to bench on Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2 or any of the more recent games... doh.gif

Unless the 670 is faster then the 680 I have no idea how it's going to contend with the 7970 overclocked considering the two are basically within margin of error maxxed out.

Exactly. Since the 7970 and 680 are fairly similar at max clocks, there's no way the 670 could somehow perform even better. At least I wouldn't think that would make any sense but anything is possible I guess....

Are you referring to the 670 vs the 7970? Cause if they ARE within margin of error maxed out, then the 670 will compete with the 7970 by price. That's my point. $80 is actually going to matter to some people, especially if you're going the multi-GPU route. That's a lot of money saved, not to mention, not having to deal with the current CF drivers for some games.

Again, if the 670 is within 5-10% of an OC'd 7970, and is $50-80 less...AMD is in trouble. That's my 2 cents.

I really don't know what to make of the 670 benchmarks coming that close to the 680. I've got to assume it's getting that close via a max OC. Or yes, it would not make sense.

there is speculation that the TT sample is an overclocked gigabyte windforce gtx670. if that's the case then the performance we see in th TT preview is likely near the cards limits and stock performance will be less. of course it all remains to be seen.

I don't understand why it has to. What is all of this fighting even about?! Of course the 670 is not going to beat the 7970 OC'd, and why should it? It's cheaper, and if it even gets close to contending with the 7970 then that is mighty impressive.
