its an hp workstation case, but its really tall and has a few fans in front and back, looks like it flows well. I can gut the motherboard and psu and throw my new ones in.

and in the worst case they dont fit, Frys has a decent case for 40 ill pick up.

so I went to frys electronics in city of industry today.

spent 30 mins looking at the stock of Videocards

they were sold out of some of the popular ones and had a thin selection.

I settled on a MSi GTX 550 Ti on a recommendation from a friend. I grabbed what looked to be a new box, went to checkout and paid 134.xx

good price.

Now, remember, I sold my motorcycle to even get this money so I took a few busses and walked a bit to get to frys, and the same to get home. Didnt get back until an hour ago and they were already closed. spent all day on this trip.

The box was shrinkwrapped just like all the other ones there, so I didnt think anything weird.

I opened it, and the first thing I saw was that the static bag was ripped and the thumb holes to open the accessory compartment were abused.

I feared the worst and kept going.

heres what I found

1. all the accessories were gone EXCEPT the miniHDMI to HDMI adapter. but it was only half in its sealed bag with one corner looking like it was chewed off by a toddler.

2. no power adapter.... the instructions mention it coming with one but i found none. as well as all the other accessories the instructions say were supposed to be there.

3. the videocard itself..... the heatsink was removed by the previous buyer and re installed BADLY... it was wobbly and CLEARLY not even touching the core it was supposed to dissipate heat from. I doubt this would have worked if I plugged it in.

So Now i gotta go back tomorrow, speak with the manager about HOW ON EARTH they could look at it and decide it was fit to re sell. its not like it was labelled with "refurbished" or anything.. it was shrink wrapped and packaged like new and thrown back on the shelf with the others.

Im really gunna raise a stink with the manager, becuase that is not a good way to sell parts, there was no warning on my end.

worst case scenario I get a GOOD replacement

best case scenario I get a better price on a faster card.

besides THAT mess, i did buy a 500GB Western Digital Caviar Green 7200 rpm hard drive for 80 bucks that i love. already installed windows to it and its nice and fast.

I must have been such a wreck after seeing the condition of the videocard, that I failed to noticed my PSU actually has its own gpu adapter.

doesnt matter, the heatsink wasnt attached anyway, i doubt this card is functional. Im a few minutes out from leaving to return it to the store.

I would return it anyways, as you already are. The fact of the matter is that you purchased a "new" item that is really an "Open Box" item, and it was not labeled as such.

Thats pretty crappy to hear about the video card. If you can swing It I would save to get a 560 ti over the 550 ti anyday

back home with my 550 Ti (REALLY new this time)

it works fine.

source engine games are old, so i dont expect a real test there.

i was able to run every source engine game at absolutel maximum settings and get 60fps on vsync

the real test will be how it does in Mass Effect 3, which Im installing right now.

if i get less than 45 fps in heavy action scenes at 1080p i WILL return it and just spend the money on a 560

the benchmarks show the 550 being significantly slower than the 560 and the 560 is highly reccommended as an all around card with "excellent" 1080p performance and "good" 2440 performance... might be worth the extra 70 bucks to get that..

Thats because of the Cuda Cores. The 550 ti has 192 Cuda Cores & the 560 non TI has 336 Cuda Cores. The 560 non ti is a far better card then the 550 TI.

d00d How did they snow you into a 550Ti?\
That's not cool at all....

Btw..here's what I'd do for an upgrade..
err..and a 6790 or 6850 would be better than a 550Ti

It'd definitely be better than what you're running :thumb.gif:
