hello guys...

it's just like what the title says... I have just got an after-market cooler, which has come with a TIM accompanying as usual, now I am going to get rid off the stock Intel cooler for my I7 860 to use the new one, but I haven't done this before actually, so I am wondering how to remove the TIM out of the CPU ??

I hope this doesn't require special materials that are not usually existing in any house... can I use the sterilizing alcohol ?? (those which are used to sterilize scars and the like)

or what ??

90% Alcohol is what you need, (I think Sterilising Alcohol would be okay) OR Aceton (Nail Polish Remover)

Steps:

Remove the Cooler from the CPU

Dab some kitchen towel (or a rag) with the Alcohol. (OR acetone)

Rub in gentle circular motions on both the base of the cooler and the CPU (WARNING: If you're using Acetone be careful not to rub it on any exposed plastics, as it may damage them)

Keep rubbing with different bits of the rag until all the TIM is gone

Dab some more Alcohol on a clean part of the rag, and give it a once-over.

Give it ~15s to dry and evaporate.

seat the new cooler with TIM.

I do this 5x/day. Its easy. You need 90% alcohol (70 is still fine if you cant get 90 right now) You also need some Q-tips, some coffee filter and some towel.

Clean both cpu and cooler with Q-tips, use a lot of em, buy the cheapest one. i usually use about 30 for each parts, I put the q-tips in the alcohol and then wash the parts, once the tip is dirty i switch q-tips, you can wipe a bit with the coffee filter, it is the best mat i found for cpu wiping it doesnt let any residue behind like towel, i use towel for mistake but usually it doesnt happen, still i keep em close. Clean with q-tips till the surface are very clean, very shinny. With little work youll ge tthere easily.

Let the parts dry for an hour or two to be safe.

I use Lighter Fuel or 90%+ Alcohol. Lighter Fuel works a bit better as it cleans the surface even better. Both are good.

What the above people said, but just keep in mind: keep it cheap, it'll do the job. I bought mine (along for much other uses including the cleaning of some harder parts of the house) for merely 4€ and I'm sure you can get even cheaper than that.
