Need Help Overclocking my AMD

So I am pretty new to overclocking and I just want to maximize my computer's performance without risking it's parts. It seems that when i first go into the bios, it is monitering my cpu ataround 48 C but keeps going up to 70 and even above. Along with this when I change the bus speeds it seems like it is automatically changing back when I load up my computer.

Comp Specs:
AMD phenom ii x4 840
radeon 5770
stock fan
not sure what motherboard at this point but its aftermarket

Hi and Welcome,

First your temps seem mighty high considering you are in BIOS.

Is your heat sink clean?

Do you have enough air flow in your case?

Did you build this yourself?

And the MB info will be very useful. Download CPUz to help with info.

Or use Hardware monitor both are great little programs.

Also get yourself CoreTemp

I have cpuz and speedfan.
My airflow is fine.
when I log onto my computer it says my core temp is only 24 while in the BIOS is just goes up and up?
Yes i did build it myself and everything is clean and it's only a bout a half a year old.
my motherboard is a ASUS m5a97

hey,

i think the first thing you should do is get a new CPU cooler, this is a must in overclocking, otherwise you could easily damage your hardware.
also i recommend you looking to this guide: (other site then ocn i know, but it helped me a lot)

Is your CPU fan speed increasing with the temp? Because when you are reaching near 70 Celsius, it should be making some terrible noise.

I am a bit concerned that your temp is increasing, even for a stock cooler.

If everything is stock, try clearing your BIOS, using the battery and jumpers.
