I can't believe I did that... I think I just destroyed all of our honeymoon pictures.... HELP

Thread Starter
So on our honeymoon, my wife and I put all of our pictures onto our netbook as the week progressed. Once we got back, we uploaded some of the pictures from the netbook to facebook. That was last summer. I just opened the netbook and decided to do some cleaning. Well I threw all of the honeymoon pictures onto a flashdrive and then deleted the copies from the netbook and emptied the trash (I am "cleaning" the netbook since my wife is going to China and taking it with her, I'd like the netbook to have as little amount of personal stuff on it as possible). I just plugged the flash drive into my rig, and it is showing up as being 3/4ths full, but NOTHING is showing up in it. I know I am a complete idiot for not taking the proper precautions..... But can anyone help me??

Also, I made sure that I could see hidden files as well, just in case.

Oh man, youve got to be in full panic mode about now. They are COMPLETELY off the netbook? No backups there or recycle bin? (I have to ask)

@Karmuhhh: he mentioned that.

Sorry for the double post. Try copying the files from the USB back onto the net book and also another computer as well... see what you see.

Are you one of those people that remove the flash drive without pressing "EJECT" or "SAFELY REMOVE DEVICE"? because if so this is what happens when you have information in it and you take it out sometimes the flashdrive does that. In my experience at least.

Try this- This is what I used to recover my files on a hard drive, flash drive, etc. to retrieve files I thought were "completely" destroyed. As long as you didnt format it you should be able to retrieve them via this

As long as you did not overwrite anything over that particular sector/data partition on the HDD, everything is still there.

Hopefully, the netbook has a traditional HDD, and not NAND flash.

In either case, give Recuva a try.
Immediately stop working on the netbook, pull the HDD, pop it into your main machine and use it as a slave.

http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Dang, brobanmanx2 beat me to it.

As for the flash drive, eject it properly this time, and pop in a linux liveCD, see if it pops up in there.

First and most importantly, stop using the netbook until you formulate an action plan. There are file recovery tools that will work as long as they are not overwritten with new data. Take a look at this website and see what options are available to you: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm?rd=1 I haven't done an "un-delete" operation before so I can't speak to what is effective or not, but if figuring out what's up with the USB key doesn't pan out, that's your other option.

There will be a bounty so large on your head you won't be able to go near any civilized system. J/K, I couldn't resist due to your avatar. Is she understanding? How long ago was your honeymoon? Maybe you could take a second honeymoon? Are the pictures no longer on the card of the camera?

Aren't there some apps that let you recover previously "deleted" apps. EDIT: nvm beat me to it.

Loosing photos is my worst nightmare I have 18K. I use a raid1 and external backup and google cloud drive to keep them safe from screw ups.

Not sure what "cleaning" you did, but try Recuva on the netbook where the originals were.

edit: damn I'm slow
