CPU Upgrade

Thread Starter
I'm currently running a 960T unlocked to a 6 core @ 3.5 Ghz.

Works great for gaming and everything else but I feel like it's holding my system back, times when I should be getting 40-50 FPS in GTA IV go down to all the way to 20-25, BF3 seems to have gotten more CPU intensive ever since the last major patch, and now I can't run at all high settings, have to run everything at low just to stay above 40 FPS.

So, I've been thinking about upgrading to either a FX-8120, FX-6200, or if I have enough money, a new mobo + 2500k.

This probably won't happen for awhile, but I wanna hear you guys out ahead of time, so I don't make a blind purchase.

thanks in advance.

Just a few notes;

Your CPU isn't holding anything back in your system. There is not bottleneck unless one or both of the cores you enables are defective, creating deficiencies.

In BF3 a 6850 isn't capable of running all high settings in MP and maintaining FPS well enough for most people, be them stock or especially the B2K maps.

If you're intending to upgrade not matter what we advise you, then don't waste the time and money by staying with AMD if all you're doing is gaming. If gaming soaks up more than 25% of your daily computer activities, and you want the performance in your games to increase, then you should go the i5 2500K + motherboard route at this point in hardware terms.

Thanks for the quick reply thumb.gif

However, post patch on BF3 I was able to maintain a average of 52 FPS on high with SSAO at my native resolution, and it was perfect then.

Now though, even on low it tends to play really choppy, like I said the patch most likely did something.

Also, I do game mostly but I do edit videos quite a bit and record gmod clips using fraps, and when recording full size my FPS goes all the way down from 300+ to 40.

I figured that the 8120 would be a good upgrade since it's only $175 and can only get cheaper here on out, or a 6200 since it's around the same price but has newer stepping for better performance, and both CPUs would work better once Windows 8 is out and I upgrade to it.

However, I guess it just depends how much money I have in the future, could try to sell my current mobo and CPU for a decent price when i have around $150 already.

For gaming, nothing from AMD is going to beat your 960T. Overclock it harder and that'll help out some. Otherwise, save up for an Intel setup.

a better gpu maybe?

EDIT: also try locking a core or two and get a higher overclock. example, 4 cores at 4.3GHz. or 5 cores at 4GHz.

Your CPU isn't holding back BF3 or if it is it's extremely negligible, going fomr a 955 @ 3.6 to 5.0 2500k really showed no appreciable gains in FPS. I'd suggest a new video card or better cooling for CPU to get higher clocks.

It's been locked at 4 cores @ 4ghz most of it's life, but as time went on I started getting BSODs, raising the voltage helped, but then after a month or so I started getting BSODs again.

Besides, BF3 seems to run alot less choppy with 6 cores than it does with 4 cores.

And yeah, I guess you guys are right in terms of my graphics card needing an upgrade, my next choice for a GFX card is definitely going to be a GTX 670, depending on how expensive it is.

Or would getting another 6850 be a better/cheaper choice? My board isn't SLi or crossfire certified but it does have another 4x lane I could use, would that work out alright?

I'm guessing you're using too much vram..lower your view distance until it says it's using<1024mb of vram
Tell you what ..960T is better for gta4 than a lot of other chips..
also..Overclock it to 4ghz+

Actually no, my settings are always using less than 750MB ram, I even went as far as to set the sliders so I was only using 600MB for Multiplayer.

But I still went all the way down to 20-30 FPS when there were alot of players around.

And yeah you're damn right about that, My old Phenom 9850 was going as low as 15 FPS in some cases, and max FPS i got was like 40.
