Help me choose my new ram.

Thread Starter
hey guys, i need a new setup. mine is showing its age.

CPU: Ivy 3770k
Mobo: Sabertooth z77

going to be keeping my current 3x500gb HDD in raid 0 and adding in an intel 240gb 520ssd for the intel smart caching.

i plan to overclock like crazy once i have the money for water-cooling, so i need ram that can handle some nice overclocking and some tight timings. looking for 16gb of ram (2x8gb) i am in canada, so please use newegg.ca (or any Canadian site)

If you really want to go all out then these should be just the ticket. I've had great luck with gSkill myself. I've installed their high and midrange ram in about 40 machines at work and never had a bit of trouble with them. If you're going for closed loop water (not my cup if tea but pretty popular these days) the included fans will really help out cooling the ram and vrm area.

Voltage:
1.65V

Stick with 1.5v for Ivy, otherwise you will just have to de-clock expensive RAM. The fact they advertise those for 3rd gen Ivy bridge is really really strange.

I suggest:
2x http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231460

That's what I went with. It will work at recommended spec and it's 1.5v. Anything beyond 1600-1866 has no real noticeable difference in games. Make sure you don't buy a kit with over 1.5v, that is the max Ivy recommends.

i think i will suggest these tho it will look terrible in ur build. These are pretty good (assuming u dont care for aesthetics)

Is there a reason it has to be 2x8gb? If not, how about 4x4gb of the awesome Samsung ram? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147094 If you haven't heard about this ram before, it easily overclocks realllly high.

ya i want 2x8gb so i have the option to add 8gb more in the future if i ever need to.

that is the strangest ram i have ever seen, and seems really under priced (and not the 8gb format i want).

i honestly have been waiting to upgrade my pc for a long ass time, and i have no problem wasting my money on the most expensive 16gb ram on newegg, which was this CORSAIR Vengeance 16gb 1866 . anything wrong with this ram? especially its overlcoakabilty?

Sorry if I suggested a 1.65 kit for IVB. Add to that you wanted a 2x8 kit, and I think I've got to stop responding to forum threads on the train. I had not heard that 1.65 would be an issue for IVB. I know several SB users that run at almost 1.7 everyday. Then again I used to be an AMD overclocker and I ran 1.825v+ daily with no problems whatsoever biggrin.gif

Looks like 1866 might be your best bet if you are determined to use 2x8. The Corsair Vengeance kit you mentioned should look sweet on a sabertooth board:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233281

One thing with your thought on future expansion, I believe with dual channel memory though it is best to stick with only two memory modules if you are planning for a rather serious overclock. Then again, IVB is a whole new ballgame so things could be different I suppose. I haven't yet come close to using 16GB of ram myself, and I do content creation for a living, so hopefully you won't need to find out.

how is that vengeance for overclocking? it was impossible to find anyone reviewing the 8gb sticks, all i found was reviews for the the 2x4gb 1866 sticks. and they apparently overclocked horribly, the reviewers couldn't even get 2000mhz without putting in 1.8-1.9v and some really loose timings.

i am leaning over to the Crucial Ballistix elite because it seems to overclock better, but it doesn't say anything about intel XMP.

atm its a choice between CORSAIR Vengeance and Crucial Ballistix elite

any opinions?
