How much RAM do you have? It could be that CS:S is eating up all your avalible RAM, so its having to pull the songs from the page file each time it needs a new one, causing the lag.

Have you tried any other music players?
This will happen when you are running low on ram mostly or have little or no pagefile.

Make sure you have a pagefile setup at around 2gbs i have found to the best regardless of the amount of RAM you have. Also this can be due to HDD failure/Stress. If you have 2x hdds it may be best to transfer your music to anther HDD as it lessens the READ/WRITE stress on your current HDD.

set the priority of Itunes lower than CS. That should make itunes lag a little instead, but not much.

Itunes lags up my computer too and I have 2048MB of RAM my page file is set to 2048/3072. Right click My Computer go to Properties, click the Advanced tab and hit the Settings Button in the Performance part. When that window opens click on it's advanced tab. At the bottom is a button to change the Virtual Memory settings.

Other things you might try is use a different music player or turn down the settings in CS:S a little?

1GB should be fine..Here is how to tinker with the Pagefile :

Quote:
THE PAGING FILE: There are two types of memory which helps XP fuction correctly. One is physical memory ( RAM ) and the other is Virtual Memory, referred to as the paging file. This is an area of your hard disk used as a buffer when RAM is low on resources. If you have another harddisk installed in your p.c you can move the paging file there and reduce the stress of two activities on your main harddisk.

Step 1: Reducing the work on your main harddisk can speed up application response times ( This will only benefit you if you have another harddisk ). Open ''System properties'' in the ''Control panel'' and select ''advanced''.

Step 2: Under ''Performance'' click on ''Settings'' then select ''Advanced''. Go to ''Virtual Memory'' and click on ''Change'' to see your current settings. At the moment ''C:'' will be selected so click to highlight your other drive instead.

Step 3: Having selected a different drive you can choose the ''custom size'' option and set an ''Initial Size'' and ''Maximum size'' for the paging file. Or opt for the ''System managed'' size and XP will decide whats best for you.

iTUNES v7.0 and up is a resource hog, it uses more than double what 6.x used. One thing you could do it revert to an older version (6.5 or so) and use that. I'm using an older version and a program called Itunes multiplugin until they work the bugs out of 7.
